Wifey, Katsuki Mina’s first exhibition in Malaysia at O Sculpture Art Space.

Exhibition Statement
Tomoe — The Essence of Pigment and the Shape of Duality

My creative process is governed by a strict rule: I arrange pigment in a circular form on the canvas
and extend it with a single brushstroke. I do not touch it beyond that. The purpose is to make the
pigment itself the artwork. While all pieces share a similar form, the way the paint rises and solidifies varies depending on the environment and the mixture of pigments. Even with the same method, no two works can ever be the same.

When I began this series, I arranged the pigment to create a gradient from light blue at the center to dark blue at the outer edge. Years later, I began producing works with the gradient reversed—from dark blue to light blue. When I placed these two types of works side by side, a concept for an exhibition emerged in my mind. That idea remained with me for years, unrealized—until now, when I was given a rare opportunity to bring it to life.

This exhibition draws inspiration from the Taijitu, the yin-yang symbol. In an age shaped by
postmodernist thought, binary oppositions have been deconstructed, giving rise to diverse
perspectives. Yet I wish to revisit the idea of duality. The Taijitu, rooted in Taoist philosophy, represents opposing forces—light and dark, female and male—that coexist without being perfectly separable. Aristotle also taught that happiness lies in maintaining balance, not in extremes.

Rather than dissecting the space between two poles, I believe in clearly defining dualities and seeking equilibrium between them. In this exhibition, I present two types of works in contrast, aiming to evoke a new sensation that may arise in the space between them.

The exhibition title Tomoe refers to the Japanese symbol 巴 (tomoe), a traditional motif resembling a comma. One of the two shapes within the Taijitu resembles the tomoe. In this exhibition, my work takes on the same significance. The tomoe has long been associated in Japan with magatama— ancient ritual beads—and is also seen as a representation of the soul.

The concept behind my work is to make mere pigment the subject of the artwork. I believe that the essence of painting lies in the pigment itself. If pigment were likened to a naked human figure, then the artist’s story, emotions, and technique would be mere adornments. By stripping away all
decoration, I aim to express the essence of painting—pigment itself—through a simple method of a single brushstroke. The finished work cannot be influenced by the artist’s narrative, emotions, or technique. What remains is simply pigment.

If the soul is the essence of a human being, then perhaps we can perceive it only after removing allthe elements with which we adorn ourselves. In that sense, my work can be seen as equivalent to the
tomoe—a representation of essence.

Lately, a quiet shift in my practice has drawn me toward increasingly purer forms of creation. This evolution spans from exploring the primal tension of the three primary colors to embracing the “dot” as a visual language within my work.

According to Wassily Kandinsky’s theory, the dot is the most fundamental unit in painting. He once said, “Everything starts from a dot.” This statement is not merely literal—it reflects his philosophical inquiry into the essence of art. Kandinsky believed that the dot is not just a visual mark, but a bearer of emotion and spiritual resonance, capable of evoking deep inner responses from the viewer.

To me, the dot carries even broader significance. It also symbolizes the atom—the basic unit of matter. The world is not made of isolated dots, but of relationships between them. Just as atoms attract and bind to form our bodies, the air, and the stars, so too do visual dots connect through rhythm and structure to form meaning.

Thus, using dots as a visual language not only embraces formal purity, but also echoes the thematic core of this series: “nothing exists alone.” Each dot is a beginning, but also a connection; a singularity, yet part of a greater whole. In this context, isolation dissolves—everything exists through relation.
