Before World of Warcraft, and even before Starcraft exploded the RTS genre, there was Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness.

It was the game that truly put Blizzard on the map, evolving the simple "Orcs vs. Humans" premise into a high-fantasy epic that defined the aesthetic of Azeroth for decades to come. While the first game was a foundational step, Warcraft II was a giant leap in color, personality, and strategic depth. ⚔️🏰🛡️

The game introduced higher levels of polish. It was one of the first RTS titles to feature Fog of War, forcing players to scout the map rather than just staring at a static battlefield. It also expanded the conflict beyond the land, introducing Naval and Aerial combat.

But what truly cemented Warcraft II in the halls of legends was its personality. The hand-drawn SVGA graphics were vibrant and iconic, but it was the sound design that stole the show. Clicking on units repeatedly to hear their "annoyed" voice lines—like the Peon’s "Work, work!" or the Ogre Mage’s bickering heads—gave the game a sense of humor that became a Blizzard trademark.
