Habitar VI KIDS

How are you holding up? These times are complex (to say the least) and at moments hard to understand. If is it difficult for a grown up to see the uncertain we’re living, how is it for a child?

On the sixth capsule of HABITAR we asked kids until 10 y/o what do they think about Covid, how do they feel, and they had SO much to say. How children connect reality and fiction, and how they interrelate the information that is given to them it’s impressive and enlightening.

We have been talking for years about kids innocence, but maybe is clarity what they have.

Enjoy Habitar VI, Kids

To celebrate the launch of the To the Streets fanzine and Window Installation, Printed Matter will host a panel discussion with three artists and activists from 3 different parts of the world. Gabriel Ebenperger (Chile), Candy Choi (Hong Kong), and Paola Mendoza (New York) will discuss the role and use of artistic expression as a way of protest and tool for change. From printing to performance and from the streets to social media, we’ll discuss the legitimized spaces where art and activism converge. The discussion will be moderated by curator Antonieta Landa.

To the Streets Soft Opening
November 7, 2020
3-6PM EST
Join us for a socially distanced outdoor gathering to celebrate the opening of the window installation, To the Streets, on view through November 25th, 2020.

The installation is an expanded look into the fanzine To the Streets, a compilation of illustrated works by eight artists: Ailadi, Carmen Pizarro, Kana Philip, Gabriel Ebensperger, Catalina Bu, Matias Prado, Jana Traboulsi, and Rufina Bazlova. They are from five different parts of the world: Chile, Hong Kong, Lebanon, Belarus, and New York. All places where protesters have taken the streets. The publication aims to take a look at this global movement and communicate to each other, and to the world, that you (we) are not alone.

The installation, designed by .vila , will utilize artwork from the zine along with broader contextualization of what is happening in each respective country.

Stop by to view the work, purchase a copy of the zine, and enjoy wine from !

Proceeds of the zine will go to Amnesty International’s fund to protect protestors’ rights worldwide.

It’s here! (It’s casi here) from Wednesday you’ll be able to get in your manitos one of the To The Streets zine. We have muchos planes for the official launching on November 7th, but anxiety is our second name, and we have to release it for online sale first (for now shipping only within the US)  More info coming, stay tuned!

What is To the Streets? in the words of curator's project:
MASS OUTRAGE,
THE GLOBAL PROTEST WAVE, CALL IT AS YOU WANT, BUT THE WORLD
IS CHANGING, AT LEAST THAT’S WHAT WE STRONGLYWANT TO BELIEVE.
To the Streets was originally going to be anexhibition opening on June 1st, 2020, but this year, with all of its surprises, happened. We felt the urge to start the conversation about the wave of globalprotests somehow, and that’s how this zine was borne.
Anti-corruption rallies in Lebanon,pro-democracy marches in Hong Kong and Belarus, protests against inequality inChile, and the Black Lives Matter movement in the U.S., are only a sample ofthe worldwide demands for political change in this chapter of human history. These nonviolent protests have been the strongest weapon in the fight againstauthoritarian policies and abusive power, and not only today, but historically, have been the initial source of a paradigm shift. Is that what we’rewitnessing? If the act of being on the streets is being heard, will this meanthere will be changes made to the established global economic and politicalsystem? Of course, we don’t have the answers to that, but yes, it's worthpaying attention to what's going on.  This zine is a compilation of illustrated works by eight artists from five different parts of the world, Chile, HongKong, Lebanon, Belarus and New York, and aims to take a look at this globalmovement and communicate to each other, and to the world, that you are not alone.

All profits will go to the Amnesty International fund that protects protesters rights worldwide.

Todo lo bueno takes time, and here it is, the second capsule of Habitar, find it in Apple podcast, Spotify and link in bio.

MATERNIDAD/MOTHERHOOD

In this edition of Habitar, Maria shows us an intimate and tender portrait of the motherhood experience during the pandemic based on audio messages sent to her by mothers from different parts of the world.

The audio capsule gives the audience a space to connect with not only the experience but also, the spaces where mothers are living and what is happening around them. All under the eye of Maria as a viewer and her own feelings about not having children herself.

Habitar (Inhabit)

Habitar is a result of the virtual residence that Maria P. Vila does in AL Galeria during the months of April, May, and June 2020 in the middle of a global pandemic and under self-isolation in her apartment.

In this work, Maria gathers memories, experiences, and feelings of people she knows in form of audio messages and editing them together building a collective narrative, that is given to the audience in a series of audio capsules focusing on differents themes like time, motherhood, sexuality, among others.

Vila works around the concept inhabit and how fluid it can be, in a sense that people are responsible to give meaning to this concept as much as the space they're inhabiting, being that space a country, a house, a room, a bed or a body. Personal experiences will be constantly changing how we're inhabiting a place and how that place is perceived after we have been there, forming a symbiotic relationship between the self and the space that is inhabited.

Habitar is a work that is alive, is a process, an ongoing project, audiences are invited and encouraged to be part of it. It's Maria one more intent to explore the collective unconscious, this time in an audio form.

Habitar

Like everyone in the art field, we have been asking ourselves these lasts months, how can we engage the artistic practice with audiences in this new condition? how can we share the artistic experience? not only visually, not just a picture of a picture, but a piece that works better on an online platform.

This and hundreds of more questions we have been exchanging with our artist in (virtual) residence .vila since two months ago when she started working on an artwork that is so close to seeing the light.

Maria's work has focused on engaging international audiences and making them part of installations that have traveled to Shanghai, Viena, Moscow, New York, Santa Cruz, Cali, Lima, and many more cities around the world.

Stay tuned...
................................................
