The Big HeArt Projects

The Big HeArt Projects Transforming Our Town One Mural at a Time The Vision: We are commissioning 10 world-class artists to create stunning murals across our town.

These murals will do more than beautify the area; they will spark important dialogue surrounding issues like addiction, mental health, LGBTQ+ rights, and child poverty. Breaking down stigmas and bringing us closer together.

Over £55,000 has been granted in total by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, supported by Wyre Council.

The funding will go towards the costs of staging Fleetwood’s Festival of Transport; Flakefest; a new event, The Fleetwood Donkey Derby and a mural for the new Civic Memorial Art Trail.

Flakefest, on the playing fields of Flakefleet Primary this Friday, 27th June is open to the whole community. The line-up of singers and musicians includes local performers Lucas Williams, the Harmony & Health singers and is headlined by 90’s pop icon Whigfield.

Fleetwood Festival of Transport - Tram Sunday on Sunday 20th July celebrates its 40th anniversary and will be packed with exhibits, entertainers, stalls and all the fun of the fair along Lord Street and across the Town Centre.

The first ‘Fleetwood Donkey Derby' will be held on The Esplanade later in the Autumn. Community groups and businesses will be invited to take part in the costume-character race.

The Civic Memorial Art Trail will be led by Christian Fenn and Hayley Garner, aka Seca One and Aylo from The Big HeArt Projects. The pair will use their skills and extensive contacts within the world of mural art, creating a new addition to the growing trail of stunning large-scale pieces across Fleetwood.

The successful funding bid was put together by the event committees plus members of organisations and community groups, now collectively known as the Fleetwood Heritage, Arts & Culture Partnership. Bringing together partners to work on a range of identified themes is the role of Future Fleetwood, the Town Centre Partnership Board.

Chair of Future Fleetwood, Dave McPartlin said, “It’s great news for Fleetwood that these events and creative projects will be supported. They will give our fantastic community some exciting opportunities to come together, attracting thousands of local residents and visitors for family fun, and generating customers for local businesses. Adding to the trail of amazing murals is also investing in the future, something new alongside everything that Fleetwood has to offer.”

“Forming the Heritage, Arts & Culture Partnership follows the successes we’ve seen in similar initiatives such as the Thrive Partnership which connects children’s health and wellbeing and Healthier Fleetwood Partnership, a point of contact for community groups. We are looking at other opportunities to ensure Fleetwood always has a voice in the decisions that affect our Town’s future.”

Further details of all the events and projects will be available on their social media pages and websites in the weeks ahead.

Here are the two final shots stitched together of our two recent murals painted in Mexico for the Akumal Arts Festival.

One mural on either side of the bridge into Akulmal.
Collaboration painted by myself (Christian Fenn), Hayley Garner and Zach Curtis

We wanted these murals to be a reminder to us all of the immense impact we have on the planet. They talk of the harm we've caused, but they also shine a light on the hope that lies in our hands.

Big thank you to Joe Schipani Jennifer TurtleBay, Joan Crowe, Steven Barber and shout out to all the other artists that made our time here even more awesome🙏

Crazy news, we didn’t even know we had been nominated until someone tagged us in the post the other week, but we’ve made it in to the final six for Local Mental Health Champion Award 2024.
There are some great organisations up with us and they all do amazing work - probably a lot more direct / front line than us, but if you would like to give us your vote I will post the link in the comments🙏

Painted by myself and Hayley Garner for Lightpool Festival 2024.
Our last mural in the UK this year.
The design for this piece was done in collaboration with local school children and the Magic Club. They were asked what came to mind when they thought of blackpool, we then took their ideas and came up with this design. Luckily the weather stayed good long enough for us to finish on time ready for the opening last Friday.
The mural is illuminated each evening for the next week and is part of a trail of over 20 other pieces - an amazing exhibition set across the town, if you're in blackpool this next week go check it out!😊
