COMING TO MEXICO CITY!!
I am proud to say that 4 of my paintings have been selected to be part of this exhibition event called, "Aquí y Allá" curated by Martina Ayala Ph.D. happening in October.
WHAT IS AQUÍ Y ALLÁ: The Right to Belong
More than 40 multidisciplinary artists from the United States and Mexico will come together this fall for Aquí y Allá: El Derecho de Pertenecer (Here and There: The Right to Belong), a binational exhibition and cultural festival opening Wednesday, October 7 at 5:00 PM at Foro Indie Rocks! Gallery in Mexico City.
Curated by Dr. Martina Ayala, the first annual Aquí y Allá creates a cross-border cultural space for artists whose work emerges from experiences of migration, diaspora, displacement, deportation, return, memory, identity and the ongoing search for belonging.
Running October 7 through November 22, the exhibition brings together visual art, film and video, music, theater, dance, literature, poetry, performance, fashion, oral history and community dialogue. Weekly public programs and special events will be announced soon.
“Who determines where we belong?”
“Aquí y Allá affirms the right to belong even when borders, migration, deportation or displacement complicate our relationship to place,” said curator Dr. Martina Ayala. “For people living across borders and in the diaspora, culture and memory travel with us. Art becomes a way to remember where we come from, understand where we are and imagine where we belong.”
ART, MEMORY AND CULTURE IN MOTION
Aquí y Allá places historic and contemporary Chicano/a/e experiences in dialogue with Mexican and Latin American artists and with creators whose lives and practices have been shaped by migration, immigration, deportation, return and transnational identity. The project also makes space for migrant, immigrant, Indigenous, Afro-Latino/a/e, Caribbean and diasporic perspectives.
Rather than treating migration solely as movement from one country to another, the exhibition asks what people carry across borders: language, family histories, traditions, music, spirituality, resistance, memory and cultural knowledge.
MORE THAN AN EXHIBITION
Throughout the six-week presentation, Aquí y Allá will extend beyond the gallery through performances, screenings, artist conversations, literary and poetry programs, theater, music, workshops and community dialogues. The complete weekly calendar will be announced soon.
