R.I.P. dear fellow Christian Baumgartner 🖤🕯️

Con gran pesar compartimos la triste noticia del sensible fallecimiento de nuestro compañero Christian Baumgartner. Incansable artista escénico, comprometido, arrojado, valiente, poseedor de una creatividad inigualable y de un rango interpretativo extensísimo. Actor, acróbata, director, profesor de teatro. Fue un pilar de la comunidad artística de San Miguel de Allende. Colaboró con distintas compañías y proyectos escénicos. Su debut con La Troupe México fue con la obra de radio "Thooth & Claw" que se presentó en vivo en el teatro San Miguel Playhouse; seguido de la puesta en escena "Largo viaje hacia la noche" de Eugene O'Neill, donde interpretó al dificilísimo personaje de Jamie Tyrone. En 2022, fue parte del elenco de "El CodexRomanoff" interpretando al hilarante padre Juan, y en 2025 tuvo una pequeña, pero no menos importante participación en "Testosterona" de la autora Sabina Berman.
Querido amigo y colega, dejas un vacío enorme. Te extrañaremos. ¡Vuela alto!🤍

La Troupe Mexico presents:

🎭Noel Coward’s comic masterpiece "Blithe Spirit" opened in London’s West End in 1941, during the Blitz of World War II, a time when Londoners were being driven into air-raid shelters to survive bombing raids of the German Luftwaffe. Coward knew the greatest gift he could bestow on his beleaguered city was laughter. Blithe Spirit endured to this day as an audience favorite.
👻The play tells the story of a novelist who invites an eccentric médium to his country home to conduct a séance, hoping to incorporate some of her “tricks of the trade” into his next book. But the séance doesn't produce the expected result; instead, it brings chaos and a comical unexpected outcome.
🎙📻The format is live radio theater – a reading by actors with music and sound effects before an audience, to be recorded for future broadcasting.
Starring: Marcela Brondo, Rodrigo Demián, Sofía Leal, José Luis Mendoza, Ivette Socorro y Josefina Valentini. Directed by Fredric Dannen.

📌Blithe Spirit will be presented in Spanish with projected English supertitles, at the Jewish Cultural & Community Center, on Wednesday, February 11, and Thursday, February 12, at 7pm, and on Sunday, February 15, at 2pm.

In March 2016, the Steinway Series was inaugurated at Centro Cultural El Nigromante (Bellas Artes). Every concert in the recital series had two specific features: the auditorium’s Steinway piano was used either as a solo or ensemble instrument; and every concert raised money and recognition for Libros para Todos, a wonderful nonprofit organization that inspires children to read books.
The series ran for six and a half years, until October 2022, at an average of about eight concerts per year. The series maintained a consistently high standard. Performers included Grammy-winning songwriter Jesse Harris, Cuban piano soloist Fidel Leal, New York cabaret singer and pianist Mark Hartma, jazz singer Iraida Noriega among many others.

The Steinway Series was suspended when, due to policy changes, the Bellas Artes ceased to be a public theater. One of the goals of the San Miguel Playhouse is to reactivate the Steinway Series, and to that purpose, the Playhouse organization is raising money to purchase a high-quality Steinway grand. We were offered this fine instrument at an attractive price, fourteen thousand dollars, of which about $6000 has already been raised in a GoFundMe campaign and from other donations. The remaining $8000 must be raised by June 1 or we risk losing this offer.

We are designing the new San Miguel Playhouse not only as an ideal theatrical space, but also as an ideal hall for chamber music recitals, with impeccable acoustics. We recently found an excellent Steinway piano for sale, and the seller offered us a price below market value. The San Miguel Playhouse A.C. has contributed a portion, and if we can raise the remainder, the piano will belong to the theater. Our plan is to offer high-quality chamber music year-round, and the acquisition of the piano is essential.

The late Jim Newell, who founded the original San Miguel Playhouse in Col. Independencia, had a Ph.D. in theater arts, and had learned every facet of his craft. Jim knew how to block a herd of actors in a complicated scene and how to light the furthest inch of a thrust stage. One of the full productions he directed, in November 2016, was the three-character play Driving Miss Daisy, which featured his widow, Judy Newell, as Daisy Werthan; Harold Dean James as her chauffeur, Hoke Coleburn; and Mick Diener as her son, Boolie.
Full productions – presentations of plays with sets, costumes, and the actors “off book” (i.e., with their lines memorized) – are an essential element of any theater company. The new playhouse, in Col. La Luz, is being constructed to include storage areas for flats (theatrical scenery), stage props and furniture, and costumes. This additional construction is included in the line-item budget, available on the website. All of this raises the cost, but the magic of theater depends on it.

The magic of theater is not merely the product of the actors on stage, but in the intricate work of the professionals behind the scenes. Pictured here is San Miguel Playhouse technical director Gerardo Charreton, managing the lighting and sound cues for one of the plays performed in Spanish at the original theater in Col. Independencia. To his left is Moisés Alzuro, operating the supertitle system that makes it possible for a combined audience of Spanish and English-speaking theatergoers to understand all that is being said.
The San Miguel Playhouse theater company is moving closer toward its goal of making the interior of its new building an ideal performance space. The company has created a line-item budget, available on website sanmiguelplayhouse.com, that includes more modern lighting and sound equipment.

Mr. Charreton did an admirable job with the rather antiquated stage equipment at the old theater. Using more modern technology, he will be able to work wonders.
