Artist Wu Yimin moved from Shanghai to New York at the end of 2019 when his son started high school here in the Big Apple. In the first months, he made the inevitable trips to IKEA to furnish his house, and also to the landmarks and well-known sites of New York.

Faced with piles of cardboard packaging that came with his new furniture, Wu decided to use them to create paintings that mark this new phase of his life, one of which is this rendition of the Beaux Arts chandelier at Grand Central Terminal Station.

For anyone living in New York, we are bound to chance upon Grand Central every so often on our travels, and for first time visitors, the station is awe inspiring - not simply because of its scale and its architectural beauty, but its familiarity, having made so many cameo roles in so many classic films.

When I saw Wu’s painting, it brought back all the feelings when I first saw the station, and the warmth and shimmer of the famous chandeliers. And now, when I find myself at the station, I’m encouraged by Wu to take in the amazing surroundings again, to rediscover the familiar space with fresh eyes and an open heart.

I'm so excited to announce a new artist that will be collaborating with Han Feng Art Space! Matt Butterworth, from Australia, was originally trained and worked as a painter, painting realistic portraits of people he loves and cares about. But with the birth of his first daughter, he started moving to clay, partly because he was spending time with his daughters looking at ancient artefacts – cups, bowls, plates, jars, jewelry and more from makers whose names history has forgotten.
It was around that time that Matt started to make "utilitarian objects", beginning with a set of spoons for his children, and slowly, he made other pieces and made them with his daughters too. Now he works exclusively with clay, making these complex, layered, unique objects shaped by the hand, and the magical process of multiple firing and glazing.

When I first saw Claire Anderson’s Venus sculptures, I was reminded of Louise Bourgeois’s autobiographical works. Only later on, did I find out that they were both inspired by sculptures from the Paleolithic era - more than 30,000 years ago. I was fascinated to learn from Claire that, across Europe and Asia, these “goddesses” or feminine figures, even when they are thousands of miles apart, shared similar round breasts and round belly. Though we don’t know much about how these figures are used, their visual connections with motherhood and fertility is obvious. I particularly like how Claire combines very modern and diverging materials - glass and concrete - to create these small sculptures. There is not only a dialogue between us and the past, but also that of different textures, the smooth and transparent glass and the porous and grainy concrete.
