Evan Honer Music — arguably the most prolific young singer-songwriter in the worlds of folk rock and country today — will be one of the primary features in Sonoran Sounds: Mill Avenue Rock, Desert Folk, and the Enduring Legacy of Arizona Music.
In addition to being a showcased artists in Sonoran Sounds, Honer's inclusion comes with a pair of bonuses:
• The final special edition of Sonoran Sounds will be the Evan Honer Artist's Edition, available during the pre-order window only.
• Honer's charity, The Cloverdale Project, will be the primary nonprofit partner of Sonoran Sounds. There are multiple ways for fans to contribute with their order, including several editions that send cuts directly to The Cloverdale Project.
The latest book by Josh Crutchmer will drop in March 2027 via Back Lounge Publishing and is available for pre-order now. Up until now, the pre-release celebration has bent heavily toward the rock scene that sprang up in and around Phoenix and Tempe in the 1990s with Gin Blossoms, Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers, and Dead Hot Workshop — before shifting in tone and base in the 2000s to Jimmy Eat World, The Format and The Maine. But make no mistake, Arizona's contribution to the worlds of country, folk and Americana is as stellar as any state's, and Sonoran Sounds will cover it all. Right now, nobody's doing that like Evan Honer.
The Surprise, Arizona, native's blend of country, folk and indie pop — along with his commitment to independence that gave rise to his Cloverdale Records label — has struck a chord with a cross-section of fans around the world, and we're going to cover all that in Sonoran Sounds.
Josh Crutchmer on Evan Honer:
I first heard Evan Honer when he opened for Wyatt Flores at Cain's Ballroom in early 2024. Honer's opening set was overshadowed by Flores's personal demons. This was the show where he and his camp decided to take a break from the road to deal with the crushing pressure of a quick rise in country music. Flores would go on to cancel his first European tour in the wake. But at the time, I made a note to follow up on that showstopping opener I saw.
A few months later, I found myself in the basement of Brooklyn Paramount in New York, talking with Honer about a series of EPs and an upcoming album he was working on. It became the first Rolling Stone profile in Honer's career.
I have followed him closely since, for his musical sense and business sense, and I will have a lot more to say about Honer as a journalist in the coming weeks — especially as he releases another EP this month.
Sonoran Sounds will cover Honer's career dating back to that 2024 show and interview, and will capture his current moment — playing "Jersey Giant" with Tyler Childers, collaborating with Medium Built, and opening for The Head and the Heart at Red Rocks — completely.
The Evan Honer Artist's Edition will go even further, adding in behind-the-music features, more from all the interviews we've had, and recaps of a pair of Honer's concerts: one from his opening run with Childers, and another from a major festival in fall 2026.
