Looking at a painting you love and looking at someone you love aren’t as different as you’d think.

Neuroscientist Semir Zeki found that beauty, real beauty, lights up the same reward circuitry in your brain regardless of the source: a painting, a face, a piece of music.

Looking at art you personally find beautiful activates the orbitofrontal cortex, a key part of the brain’s pleasure and reward center.

Standing in front of the right painting for ten minutes does something most routines don’t: it holds your attention completely, without asking you to try. Neuroscience shows your brain reacts differently to a real work than to a copy, activating the orbitofrontal cortex only for the authentic one. The reaction is real, but in our frenetic routines, we rarely give ourselves uninterrupted time to let it happen.

Art doesn’t wake anyone up by following the rules. It works because it breaks from what a painting, a sculpture, a museum is supposed to be.

In Wonju, Korea, at Museum SAN, James Turrell breaks the rule that art needs an object at all. His landmark Skyspaces are built around nothing but a cut in the ceiling and the changing color of the sky, where the only thing the work asks of you is to sit still and look up.

In Bogotá, Colombia, Doris Salcedo breaks a different rule. Her museum “Fragmentos” is a living work of art, a site of memory, and a space for creation all at once. Its floor was built from the melted-down weapons surrendered by the FARC-EP, with women who survived sexual violence during Colombia’s armed conflict taking part in its creation. A floor isn’t usually where the hardest conversation in a country happens. Here, it is.

Critical thinking and quiet contemplation aren’t opposites, they’re both art doing its job. Some pieces are built to start a discussion. Others are built to stop one, just long enough to notice something.

Neither piece asks you to admire it. Both ask you to wake up, one through light, the other through memory.

Art heals: it’s not a slogan. This is a World Health Organization (WHO) finding, and now it’s a biology finding too.

In 2019, WHO Europe reviewed 3,000+ studies and concluded the arts play a measurable role in preventing illness, promoting wellbeing and supporting treatment, a public health tool, not a wellness add-on.

This year, University College London took it further: a study of 3,556 UK adults found that people who engaged with art monthly were 1.02 biological years younger than those who did it once or twice a year. Lead researcher Daisy Fancourt puts it simply: arts engagement is turning out to be as fundamental to health as exercise, diet and sleep.

Next time someone calls art a luxury, send them this.

Paris meets Seoul. ARTERNATIV Journeys meets Korea.

The Centre Pompidou just opened its first Asian satellite in Seoul, and we will be there for its opening season. A new landmark joining Leeum, MMCA and the world-class ecosystem that has made Seoul one of the most exciting art capitals on the planet.

Journey #6 kicks off with Frieze Seoul and KIAF, then goes deeper: private studio visits, galleries, collectors’ homes, and the people shaping the future of Korean contemporary art. Between appointments, the hidden Seoul: ancient temple courtyards, traditional markets, neighbourhoods where thousands of years of history meet one of the most forward-looking cultures in the world.

From Seoul we travel to Gwangju for the Biennale, one of the most important platforms for contemporary art in Asia. A different pace, a different lens.
