Nickolas Muray was born in Hungary in 1892. As a young man he emigrated to the USA, where he settled. He started his career at Harper's Bazaar, quickly becoming a leading photographer who portrayed many of New York's celebrities. Later he also published in magazines such as Vanity Fair, Vogue and The New York Times.

In 1931, Muray is introduced to Frida Kahlo and the two begin a love affair that lasted nearly a decade, during which Muray took some of the most emblematic photographs of the Mexican artist and that she kept in her personal collection. The affair ended in 1939, and Muray and Frida remained friends until the painter's death in 1954.

Muray died in 1965 while practicing fencing, a sport in which he was also an award-winning athlete (he represented the USA at the 1928 and 1932 Olympic Games), having won more than 60 medals throughout his life.

“Painted blue, outside and inside, it seems to shelter a bit of sky. It is the typical house of village tranquility where good food and deep sleep give one enough energy to live without serious alarms and peacefully die…”

- Mexican poet Carlos Pellicer about the legendary Blue House, the place where painter Frida Kahlo was born and grew up in, where she lived with Diego Rivera, and where she would spend her last days.

In this photograph Frida Kahlo sits next to Dr. Farill, their faces with the same expressions pictured by the artist in the painting we see in the back, made as an homage to the doctor.

Kahlo believed that Dr. Farill saved her life. She would spend 9 long months hospitalized and endure 7 spine surgeries performed by Dr. Farill to deal with the severe back pain she felt. The “Self-portrait with the Portrait of Doctor Farill” (1951) was the first painting she made when she finally recovered enough to resume painting.

Here Mexican painter Frida Kahlo is seen photographed in her early childhood at the age of 5, one of the many stills Frida would keep to build her personal collection, that would grow to comprise more than 6000 photographs.

Until the 16th January, 241 of these intimate images, including this one, today considered a collection of valuable learning tools about the life of the famous artist, can be seen in the exhibition “Frida Kahlo – Her Photographs”, currently on display at the Stone Bell House (Galerie hlavního města Prahy), in Czech Republic.
