A girls shoe is travelling the world. It has been photographed by dozens of photographers in many different countries.

The Shoe From Peru

This project is about this little girl shoe that – from May 2008 on – is travelling around the world going from photographer to photographer. Almost 5 years later the shoe has been in Europe, Asia, Africa, South America and North America and it has been photographed by 49 photographers. Slowly but surely the shoe is finding it’s way back to the riverbeds where it has been found

. After the big flood of the 1998 El Nino phenomenon, there were thousands of shoes without a pair scattered all over the lower Rio Ica Valley, Peru. Claudia Luthi couldn’t resist picking one up: A small black girl shoe, made of patent leather, like they use them for First Communion and the like… kind of a Cinderella shoe, obviously used, with it’s unknown story graved into the lacquer.

On this day one year ago, we learned that Claudia Luthi, kind soul and compassionate photographer, had passed away. She was much loved and is sorely missed by everyone here!

Claudia found the Shoe From Peru, a little girl's patent leather shoe, on a riverbed after a big flood in 1998. Starting in May 2008, the shoe travelled the world for six years before it finally returned to Claudia's home in Lima, Peru, in August 2014.

This is one of the photos Claudia took of the shoe as she found it on that riverbed in the Rio Ica Valley nearly two decades ago:

The Shoe from Peru encountered another photographer fond of using alternative photographic techniques (for her personal work) in Rhode Island-based Nicole Gesmondi, and stayed long enough to pose for this polaroid shot. But the show must go on: nearly six years after first leaving Lima, the little shoe is still travelling...

Nicole has kindly sent us the following bio: "Wedding and fine art photographer Nicole Gesmondi gradutated from the Hartford Art School with a BFA in photography in 2005. Her work has been published in JPG Magazine, Light Leaks Magazine, and purchased by private art collectors. In her spare time, Nicole can be found rummaging yard sales and browsing eBay for vintage cameras and expired film. She refuses to leave home without her Holga and a Polaroid Back."

Many moons ago, the Shoe from Peru visited photographer Blue Mitchell in Portland, Oregon (USA). Blue specialises in unconventional photographic techniques, such as exposing his films to heat to create a bubbly surface and then transferring the image to wood. His photos of the little Shoe bear witness to some of that technical playfulness. When not busy working on his own photos, Blue teaches workshops, edits an annual photo publication, or curates an online gallery. More salty air for the Shoe from Peru as it visits Norway in the early autumn of 2010. Lise Utne writes the following about her diptych:

"In 2010, Claudia Luthi (from Lima, Peru) invited me to photograph the Shoe From Peru (and its diary) here in Norway. Overjoyed, I wanted the Shoe to experience the excitement of going on the Kristiansund-Trondheim catamaran ("Kystekspressen"). In the left-hand photo the vessel has stopped at Edoy to pick up new passengers. Across the fjord (Edøyfjorden) lie the islands of Tustna and Stabblandet, with mountains rising 900 metres straight out of the sea."

The Shoe from Peru visits Dorset, England (© Stephen Foote). In early August 2009, Stephen Foote posted an album on his Facebook profile with the following caption: "The Shoe from Peru arrived yesterday. Typical British Summer, it was raining. Like any guest who comes to my house, I took the Shoe to Kimmeridge, and took her portrait on the beach, in the rain."

And the travel continues. Bel Pedrosa (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) has made some incredible photographs of the shoe.

This photo is taken on Praia do Leme where the shoe is part of a Brazilian ritual that takes place every year on December 31th
