Among the works on view in Abstract Stone, César Paternosto’s current show at Galería RGR, is the large painting Archetypal (1982). Its burnt orange pattern is made up of stripes in different colors, creating a series of diamonds within a hexagonal figure. These geometric forms are based on square motifs known as t’oqapu that date from the Inca Empire (15th–16th century).

The t’oqapu appear in ancient Andean textiles of the period, most of them tunics worn by those of high rank, and are understood to have represented peoples, places, or social roles in the Empire. The motifs appeared in single or multiple bands across the textile, much like the stripes of color that stretch left to right across the painting.

The title Archetypal comes from Paternosto’s thesis that these symbols are the earliest prototypes for visual abstraction, as in non-figuration, in the Americas. The ancient t’oqapu were then a source of inspiration for this modern abstract painting.

César Paternosto: Abstract Stone, remains on view through October 24.

Last month saw the opening of “Extraña vegetación”, Magali Lara’s solo show at Galería Ramón Alva de La Canal at the Universidad Veracruzana (UV) in Xalapa. According to curators Virginia Roy and Luis Hidalgo, the exhibition brings together works in which “the constant presence of nature unfolds to adress notions such as identity, sexuality, the cycles of life and death, or their relationship to the world.”

Among Mexico’s state universities, the UV's School of Arts is one of long-standing tradition. This exhibition reinforces Lara’s commitment to teaching beyond Mexico City, and her interest in meeting students and connecting with an academic community.

The show will remain open to the public through November 29, 2026.

In Residence: Francisco Muñoz at Jingdezhen International Studio Residency

Known as the “Porcelain Capital,” Jingdezhen, China, has been a center for ceramic production since the 10th century. Today, it is home to the Taoxichuan Ceramic Art Avenue, where Francisco Muñoz is participating in the Migratory Bird Project, his latest artist residency. Taoxichuan receives artists interested in exploring Jingdezhen's ceramic traditions and techniques, including industrial porcelain-making.

This is Muñoz’s third residency in Asia, where the artist has found resonances between his own practice and local spiritual traditions. The results of his previous residency, in Japan, were presented at Galería RGR in the group exhibition To Speak All the Languages, alongside Soe Yu Nwe and Teruri Yamawaki, his fellow residents.

Hilma’s Ghost participates in Tarot! Renaissance Symbols, Modern Visions, an exhibition at The Morgan Library & Museum in New York that traces the evolution of tarot from its origins in Renaissance Italy to its enduring influence on modern and contemporary art. The blockbuster show closes on October 4.

The exhibition brings together historical masterpieces alongside works by artists who have reimagined tarot as a visual and conceptual language, and that, through symbolism and the occult, have made tarot cards a source of continuous artistic inspiration. Hilma’s Ghost’s practice, committed to abstraction, feminism, spirituality, and collaborative practice, engages directly with tarot as a subject for artistic inquiry.

Today, Julio Le Parc would turn 98 years old.

Born in Argentina in 1928, he arrived in Paris at the end of the 1950s and was a cofounder of the Groupe de Recherche d'Art Visuel (GRAV). In 1966, he received the Grand Prize for Painting at the Venice Biennale. For over seven decades he used light, movement, and color so that the viewer could move from passive contemplation towards active participation in the work.

At Galería RGR, we had the privilege of supporting his work. Today, on the first birthday we celebrate without him, we remember him with thankfulness and admiration.

Over the course of his career, César Paternosto has worked on several different bodies of work. One of the most fruitful is inspired by ancient archaeological sites of the Andes, such as Tiwanaku in Bolivia, which Paternosto first visited and photographed in 1977.

Tiwanaku was built around a large central courtyard flanked by impressive stone gateways with carved transoms, including the Gate of the Sun and the Gate of the Moon. Paternosto thinks of these gateways as portals, or sites of transition between the sacred and the profane in ancient Andean culture.

In Abstract Stone, the artist’s first solo show at RGR, hangs Sumpu Punku (1992), which was directly inspired by Tiwanuku’s gateways. Painted in acrylic mixed with marble powder, the work alludes to ancient Andean stonemasonry while the “Punku” in the title borrows the word for “portal” in Quechua. Seeking to draw on Andean architecture and ritual without appropriating the ancient remains, Paternosto sought always to maintain a respectful distance from his source of inspiration.

On view through 25 October 2026 at Serpentine: Jesús Rafael Soto: Pénétrable BBL Jaune.

How does matter transform space and influence human movement? This is the question at the heart of Soto’s Pénétrable series, begun in 1967. Consisting of a steel framework and suspended PVC tubes, the sculpture invites visitors to enter, move, and touch the work.

Soto’s Pénétrables have been displayed in many different contexts: as works of public art, within museum galleries, and even on stage, as part of set designs for modern dance. They represent the artist’s conviction that art is only complete when a viewer becomes a participant.
