When You Have a Listing On AirBnb or VRBO You Have One Big Problem - You Don't Own Your Customers
Most Airbnb and Vrbo hosts are focused on getting bookings. That’s fine. No bookings = no money.
But there’s a bigger problem most hosts don’t see: you don’t own your customers.
When someone books through Airbnb or Vrbo, you don’t control the relationship, you don’t have direct access to the guest, and you can’t market to them again. Every booking becomes a one-time event. You’re starting from zero every time.
That means you’re renting access to customers; you're not building a business.
An email list changes that completely.
Instead of relying on Airbnb every time, you can stay in touch with past guests, offer repeat stays, promote upgrades, and build direct bookings without paying platform fees. Even a small list gives you stability and control.
If you don’t do this, here’s what happens: you stay dependent on algorithms, you lose repeat revenue, you deal with constant competition, and you build nothing long-term. One policy change or account issue can wipe you out overnight.
With an email list, you turn one booking into multiple opportunities. You build a real asset. You stop starting from zero.
This is where most hosts get confused. You’re not trying to break Airbnb’s rules or steal bookings. You’re simply building a relationship after the stay. That’s normal business.
It can be as simple as offering a local guide, WiFi access page, or a small perk in exchange for an email. Then you follow up, stay in touch, and give them a reason to come back.
Every guest you don’t capture is gone forever. You already paid to get them — and then you let them walk away.
Airbnb is not your business. It’s a channel. If you rely on it completely, you stay dependent. If you build your own list, you gain control, increase profit, and create something that actually grows over time.
You don’t need more bookings. You need to stop losing the ones you already have.
