Many Malawians deny that Rashley was ever “cancelled” over his scandal. Instead, they argue that he is simply a victim of his own success.

Rashley shot to fame with Ndizasangalala—a masterpiece that many still consider the greatest RnB track to ever come out of Malawi. The song was a cultural moment, the kind that cements an artist’s place in history. But therein lay the curse: after Ndizasangalala, every release was measured against that towering benchmark.

Yes, he dropped other singles, and some even did fairly well. But none carried the same magic, none hit with the same force. Slowly, the hype began to fade, and Rashley started to look like a shadow of his former self. The higher he had soared, the steeper the fall felt.

So no, it wasn’t really the scandal that clipped his wings, nor the infamous off-key performance at Lake of Stars. Those may have added to the whispers, but the real truth is harsher: Rashley set the bar so high that he could never reach it again. Fans weren’t cancelling him—they were just waiting for another Ndizasangalala, and it never came.
