Great news for Malawi!

The Ministry of Finance has confirmed that an IMF delegation arrived today, 21st September 2026, for talks on the Extended Credit Facility (ECF).

This is just 3 months after their last visit. A clear sign that the world is trusting Malawi again, one year after Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika took over leadership.

RETIRED CIVIL SERVANTS PRAISE MUTHARIKA FOR CLEARING GRATUITY ARREARS

Staff Reporter, September 2026

The Association of Retired Civil Servants in Malawi has praised the administration of President Arthur Peter Mutharika for clearing gratuity arrears for 10,000 retired officers within its first year in office.

Speaking to the media in Blantyre, President of the Association, Nellie Nkhumba, said retired civil servants suffered for five years under the previous administration, with a huge backlog of unpaid gratuities.

"In the past five years, there was a huge backlog. People could go up to five years without receiving their gratuities. It was very painful for many retired officers," said Nkhumba.

She described the Mutharika administration as a listening government, commending it for achieving in one year what others failed to do in five years.

"This government listens. In only one year, they have done what others failed to do in five years. We are very grateful that our members have finally received what is rightfully theirs," she added.

Nkhumba however appealed to government to consider amending some retirement rules, saying retired servants should be getting two-thirds of their gratuity as a lump sum, rather than the current one-third provided for in the regulations.

"Our request to government is to review the rules. Retired officers need more at the point of retirement to start a new life," she said.

The payment of gratuities is seen as one of the major achievements of President Mutharika’s first year, restoring dignity to thousands of Malawians who served the country.

1YEAR FREE OF FUEL CRISIS IN MALAWI

On 16th September, Malawians made a defining choice. They chose Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika — they chose good leadership.

Within just one year, that choice has transformed the country.

Malawians cast their vote to change the situation, and indeed, the situation has changed.

Gone are the days of long queues at fuel stations. Today, fuel is available everywhere across the country. What was once a daily struggle has become a thing of the past.

From the high cost of living, Malawians are now experiencing stable prices on the market. From forex scarcity to forex availability in our banks. From the burden of school fees to free education for our children.

In only one year, President Mutharika has managed to change the country and restore hope to the people.

This is what Malawians voted for.
This is good leadership in action.

From queues to availability. From crisis to stability. From hardship to hope.

This is the leadership we voted for.

US president Trump Hails Mutharika for Reviving Malawi's Economy.

US President Donald Trump has hailed President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika for what he describes as significant economic progress in Malawi during his first year in office.

In a letter to President Mutharika, Trump said the Malawi leader had managed to change the country’s economic situation within a relatively short period after taking office.

Mutharika inherited a struggling economy from his predecessor, Lazarus Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), with the country facing fuel shortages, low fuel reserves and a high cost of living.

Against this backdrop, Trump commended Mutharika’s efforts to steer the country towards economic stability.

As Mutharika marks one year in office, Trump has encouraged him to continue with measures aimed at improving food security and strengthening the economy.

The US President has also called on Malawians to support the government, saying there can only be one president at a time and that citizens should rally behind the sitting administration.

Trump’s remarks come as the Mutharika administration continues efforts to address the economic challenges it inherited and improve living conditions for Malawians.
