CHARITY SHIELD IN MALAWI

Malawi as a country could be one the most expensive nations in Africa. By being expensive, I mean that things which are meant to be for free or subsidised are put on a higher price.

I will not talk about fertilizer subsidy since it's politicized by those in power. Let me talk about the issue at hand as the one which has opened a can of worms...

Charity shield has a purpose which is meant for "Charity" and we should mark the word, "Charity"....
How many are going to benefit from this charity and how many are going to pay for this cup?

Malawians may be football lovers but they toil and sweat for their hard earned money. Coupled with that, there is tax almost everywhere and on everything we buy.

Few questions...
1. How many will financially benefit from this Nomads & Bullets game?
2. Will the proceeds reach the so called charitable organizations?
3. Is K10000 as a gate fare, fair for an average football Malawian fanatic?

For now, let's look at the basics. Food, house and clothes but don't forget to save some for the rainy days. Football in Malawi has always been a business for just few people. The rest of us are just passionate about it yet we walk home using our feet.

Before I leave, schools are opening on Monday and that son, daughter, nephew, sister, brother and others need pocket money, fees, transport...

K10000 gate fare for a Charity Shield football cup is not what a Malawian can afford. We can follow the game through other cheaper means..

CONSUMERS ARE THE MOST AFFECTED IN OUR ECONOMY

What I am about to say is something that is very obvious as all of us can relate to.

Briefly put, the economy of Malawi does not favour consumers at all. Let me put it in simple terms that it is the consumer or rather those people who buy goods at a retail price that usually suffer when prices of commodities have gone up.

Picture this please, when prices of a commodity like fuel has gone up, a wholesaler will not hesitate but raise the prices of his goods so that he maintains the same profit that he normally makes. This in the end will automatically also make a vendor or those operating grocery shops or hawkers to raise the price of their goods.

Now, once the consumer goes to buy that commodity that has been raised by the wholesaler and the vendor, he will have no choice but still be forced to buy the commodity despite that his or her income still remains the same. The thing is, consumers have no say or act on how and why they are the rise in price of one commodity or service always hits them hard.

The list of things that affect consumers once their prices have gone high or are in low supply is endless. Talking of electricity, fuel, poor road network, foreign currency, medicine and others are things as well as services whose rise or poor supply always affects the consumer.

The question is, who is there to act as well as speak on behalf of the consumer? It is a known fact that consumers can't speak with one voice and this economy of ours is there to make the haves still accumulate more and those with little have less.

In conclusion, isn't it high time that consumers started thinking along those lines of becoming vendors or hawkers themselves? Maybe, just maybe, this chain of command can stop victimizing retail buyers who also answer to the name of consumers.

MY TAKE ON THE INCREASE IN CASES OF SU***DE

Nowadays, hardly a fortnight goes without hearing about cases of su***de. If my observation is right, you may agree with me that most of these people who are taking their lives are of the male gender. Not only that, it can't be a fallacy to claim that most of these men committing su***de are doing it as a result of failed relationships. By failed relationships, I am referring to marriage, courtship, dating or even secret love affairs. There should be something about men that makes them to be the ones who are committing more su***des due to failed relationships as compared to the female gender. But why are more men killing themselves yet the relationships involve both parties?

Firstly, most men are under pressure once they are in a relationship. This pressure comes as they are supposed to satisfy their love or marriage partner in many ways as well as aspects. Most men are told that 'you are the man' and you need to do something to solve the situation. Men find themselves in different situations so that they support and satisfy their spouses in many ways; be it financially, socially, materially, morally, academically or even sexual satisfaction. Consequently, when men can't meet these demands, they view themselves as failure and not all men can stand and face being branded or viewed as someone who is failing to satisfy their spouse. What do some of them opt? It's su***de of course.

Another one is that most men can't come to admit that even their spouse, girlfriend, side chick, fiance or whoever lady they are in a romantic relationship with, can cheat on them. Most men are still living under the allusion that so long as they are doing their best to 'take care' of their lady, that lady can't cheat on them. They think that it is only prostitutes who can have multiple sexual partners. This is probably not true but still once these men discover that their lady has been cheating on them, they can't face that reality. They ask themselves a lot of unanswered questions such as : For how long has this been happening behind my back? How many people know this? Why did she do it? What positions did he do it with her?... Blah blah. It is these questions that make a man to resort to taking his own life for he thinks he has been stripped naked in public and can't handle the shame.

Apart from the causes discribed above, the other one has to do with the nature of most men who are in a relationship. Most men, by nature, are introverts. They do not right away say what is bothering or eating up their minds. This is why they don't share with their friends or any other person, the problems that they are going through in their marriage or love relationship. They think that they will control the situation or that by being open about marital problems to an outsider, is not being man enough. As problems pile up in their minds, these men become overwhelmed and when these problems get out of hand, these men decide to take their own lives. They think that there is no way out of these problems.

The causes alluded to above are just a tip on an ice berg regarding the reasons as to why most men are taking their own lives. There are many reasons and as a society, it's high time we started doing something in order to eleminate or better still, reduce the vice. Let's cease from being people who are merely good at sharing these su***de cases on social media but we should start doing. For a start, we can start by opening up to one another regarding these problems.The problem that made that man to commit su***de for is also something that your neighbor, friend, workmate, relative is also struggling with. Don't get shocked when you hear that he has also killed himself. Let's share these problems and probably seek the required help before we lose more men from our midst.
