The ECHO funded Disaster Risk Management and Anticipatory Action (DRIMAA) project has strengthened the capacity of communities in Phalombe and Blantyre to prepare for climate related disasters.
Launched in April 2024, the project provided cash grants and enhanced early warning systems to help communities respond proactively to climate shocks.
Ronnie Supuni, Chairperson of the Chitsanzo Group, said the initiative equipped members with practical skills and fostered unity.
“The project equipped us with skills and a sense of unity,” said Supuni, who added that it has improved livelihoods and empowered persons with disabilities.
She pledged that the group will sustain the gains achieved.
The project, implemented by the Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) in partnership with other organizations, emphasized disability inclusive planning and community based disaster preparedness.
Speaking during a lessons learned workshop held in Blantyre, MRCS Director of Programmes Leonard Maganga said the project successfully piloted innovative approaches such as anticipatory cash transfers and group cash grants.
He said these interventions have enhanced communities’ ability to prepare for and respond to climate related disasters.
The project is being implemented with support from the World Food Programme (WFP), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Danish Red Cross, and the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA).
