Malawi Can Become Regional Legume Hub - Irish Aid

The Ireland Ambassador to Malawi has said Malawi has the potential to become a regional legumes hub in Southern Africa.
The Irish Ambassador to Malawi Kate Brady was speaking during the launch of the Legume Tour Malawi 2026 on Tuesday in Chikwawa District
" With the right investment and partnerships, Malawi can become a major player in regional and global legume markets,” Ambassadors Brady said.
The Legume Tour 2026 has brought together officials from Irish Aid, farmers, government officials, banks and other development partners.
Speaking on behalf of Banks and other financing partners, Leon Kotze from Standard Bank said the bank was ready to support farmers under the Irish Aid legumes initiative.
“We are ready to partner with farmers to help agriculture grow, we want to grow with them” Kotze said.
Harvey Charlie of International Institutes for Tropical Agriculture IITA said better seed will give farmers better yields and income and they are always ready to help farmers access better seeds.
The IITA which is part of the tour is a seed research organisation that breeds, and develops seeds and seeds systems for farmers in Malawi.
The 3-day media tour has been organized by Palladium’s Growth Poles Project, Agricanes, Sangowa Innovation Labs and the Soybean Innovation Lab.
