Moorthy Nagalingum was more than a legendary Mauritian artist; he was a visionary who shaped the artistic landscape of Mauritius with courage, passion, and unwavering dedication. Recently elevated to the rank of Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (CSK) for his contribution to the visual arts, his artistic repertoire is admired by many. In 1976, as the Head of School of Fine Arts, at the prestigious Mahatma Gandhi Institute, he inspired generations of artists, not only through his teachings but through the depth of his artistic philosophy and his commitment to cultural development.

The existentialism of "Salon de Mai"; Mr Nagalingum created a platform, a space which evolved into a gallery for artists to exhibit their work under a curatorial and thematic approach that elevated artistic dialogue and encouraged reflection within society.

Over the years, "Salon de Mai" has embodied an artistic reputation which now stands as a brand in Mauritius, carrying emotional and cultural significance for generations of artists. Artists, curators, art collectors associate the event with a sense of belonging, excellence, and profound admiration for the artistic démarche he initiated.

On behalf of all academics at the School of Fine Arts, we wish to express our deepest sympathies to his family and to our artistic community. Mr Nagalingum leaves behind not only remarkable artworks but will always be remembered for his humility, his kindness. His influence will continue to live through every artist he inspired, every exhibition he envisioned, and every creative space he helped build.

May you rest in peace, Mr Moorthy Nagalingum (CSK)
