Launched in 1998, the Festival has gone beyond the fondest dreams of the organizers to the extent that for some years now, the Festival has established itself solidly as Malta’s longest-running high culture event with an ever-widening international dimension. The creation and inclusion of the Victoria International Arts Festival in the popular festa season in honour of St George, Protector of the

island of Gozo, was an innovation that confirmed St George’s basilica’s leading role in Gozo’s cultural scene. Joseph Vella, composer, university lecturer and perhaps the most esteemed musical director in the Maltese islands.

Tomorrow, Wednesday 24 June, the Victoria International Arts Festival shifts to the Church of St Francis for an evening of chamber music with Gozo-based Cordia String Quartet. In previous editions of VIAF, this quartet has impressed audiences with performances of some of the most demanding works in the string quartet repertoire, and this year promises to be no exception.

Comprising David Lang and Emese Tóth (violins), Jacob Portelli (viola), and Frank Camilleri (cello), the quartet will perform Haydn’s radiant ‘Sunrise’ Quartet and Brahms’s richly textured String Quartet No. 2 in A minor.

A concert not to be missed, and one that promises a real treat. It starts at 8pm and, as with all VIAF concerts, admission is free.

Tomorrow, Tuesday 23 June, the Victoria International Arts Festival presents Spanish duo Luis Fernández-Castelló and Francesc Llop-Álvaro, who will give a clarinet and pianoforte recital performing works by Bernstein, Brahms, De Falla, Gade and Ruera. This recital will take place at the Aula Mgr G. Farrugia and admission is, as always, free.

Tomorrow, Monday 22 June, Polish pianist Julia Miller performs works by Szymanowska, Farrenc, Hensel, Beach, Price, and Bonds in a piano recital at the Aula Mgr Giuseppe Farrugia. As usual, concert starts at 8pm, and admission is free.

Tomorrow, Saturday 20th June, Vienna-based Trio Noria, made up of Clemens Böck (Violin), Hana Hubmer (Viola), and Sebastian Bertoncelj (Violoncello) will be giving a recital of works by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Dohnanyi at the Aula Mgr G. Farrugia. The concert starts at 8pm.

Entrance is free.

Tomorrow, Friday 19th June at the Aula Mgr G. Farrugia, 8pm, the second violin and pianoforte recital in this year's edition takes place with Stefan Calleja and Stephanie Quintano teaming up to regale patrons with a programme of works by Beethoven, Schumann, Walton, and Ysaÿe. A programme such as this one by two of Malta's leading musicians cannot not be full of promise! As always, entrance is free!

The Royal Conservatoire Brass of Scotland are back! Led by the charismatic John Logan, Head of Brass at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, this magnificent ensemble returns to Gozo with a programme guaranteed to delight. From Dvořák's foot-tapping Slavonic Dance No. 8 and the irresistible Zorba the Greek, to dazzling variations and Bizet's ever-popular Farandole, our audience is in for a real treat. This concert takes place tomorrow, Thursday 18 June, 'al fresco' on the stunning rooftop of Il-Ħaġar - Heart of Gozo Museum and starts at 8pm. With music like this and a setting to match, all the ingredients are there for a splendid summer evening. We look forward to welcoming you!

BrassTubes need no introduction to lovers and admirers of brass bands. Led by the charismatic Mark Gauci, their concert today, Wednesday 17th June, will regale the audience with a varied mix of pieces ranging from the Baroque to the contemporary, from Handel to Holst, Donizetti to De Curtis. You name it, it's there.

The concert will take place at the Bishop's Curia Courtyard and starts at 8pm. Entrance is free. Come and join the fun.

Tomorrow, Tuesday 16 June at 8pm, at the Aula Mgr G. Farrugia, VIAF is presenting a recital by Norwegian violinist Rebecca Nøstrud Isaksen and pianist Milica Lawrence. Works by Kreisler, Svendsen, Grieg, Massenet, and Sarasate will be performed. Entrance is free.

Victoria International Arts Festival is proud to acknowledge that one of the prizes awarded to winners of the Norway National Competition for Youths is participation in the Victoria International Arts Festival. This initiative was started by Mro Joseph Vella. This is the twenty-second year that Norway has sent very promising, up-and-coming musicians to perform in the Victoria International Arts Festival. We look forward to continued collaboration between Norway and VIAF.

Choral Recital by the Laudate Pueri Choir (director: George J. Frendo)

Monday 15th June, St George's Basilica, 8pm

The Laudate Pueri Choir of St George's Basilica, who also organises VIAF, is this year celebrating its 50th anniversary. The Choir’s 50-year history and reputation have confirmed the Laudate Pueri as a leading interpreter of classical music, both sacred and secular. The motets featuring on this evening’s programme are by four of the greatest composers of sacred music, namely, Palestrina, Perosi, Bartolucci, and Joseph Vella, whose works have established the choir as a formidable exponent of the genre. These works form an integral part of the repertoire that the Choir regularly sings during the Liturgy at St George’s Basilica, not only on important feast days but every Sunday during the 11am Mass.

This evening opening concert is the first of 31 musical and artistic events that VIAF is offering this year. Tomorrow, a piano quintet from the Mozarteum, Salzburg, will perform a concert of works by Haydn, Bruch, Beethoven, Piazzolla and more. This will be at the Aula Mgr G. Farrugia, 8pm. Entrance is free.
