On Thursday 4 June, we welcomed at Il-Ħaġar a group of Year 1 students from Ta’ Kerċem’s St Theresa Primary School. The visit formed part of the school’s parental involvement initiative and was facilitated through the participation of Neville and Sabrina Galea, a couple from Victoria. The young students were welcomed by Fondazzjoni Belt Victoria Chairman Antoine Vassallo, who gave them a guided tour and a detailed explanation of the exhibits.

The outing also included a visit to the nearby St George’s Basilica and its neo-Byzantine Chapel, as well as to the studios of Leħen il-Belt Victoria, where they had the opportunity to observe and experience first-hand the day-to-day operations of a community radio station.

The teachers and students expressed their gratitude to all those who contributed to the organisation and success of this educational activity.

All of us at Il-Ħaġar congratulate Mr Carmel Zammit, who was honoured this evening by the Victoria Local Council for his lifelong voluntary work across so many aspects of our city’s community life, particularly at Teatru Astra and our museum, where he is one of our most loyal and dedicated volunteers.

On this Victoria Day, Il-Ħaġar Museum also wishes to congratulate Mro Dr John Galea and Mro Colin Attard, who were bestowed with Ġieħ il-Belt Victoria; Maria Schembri, recognised for her contribution to the performing arts in Victoria; philanthropist Paul Zammit; and all those honoured for their contributions, each one important to the life of Gozo’s capital.

Congratulations to Mr Zammit and to all.

As part of our ongoing volunteer training programme, during the month of May, a number of Il-Ħaġar Museum volunteers attended and successfully completed the Award in First Aid course offered by Jobsplus.

Thanks to the strong interest shown by our volunteers in this 16-hour course, delivered over 3 days, Jobsplus very kindly agreed to hold the training at Il-Ħaġar. The course included group discussions, presentations, practical demonstrations and hands-on exercises.

The qualification awarded on successful completion of the course is recognised by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority (MFHEA) at MQF Level 4 and is aligned with the European Qualifications Framework for Lifelong Learning.

We congratulate all our volunteers who took part and thank them for their continued commitment to developing their skills in support of our visitors and community.

We are delighted to release the details of the next temporary exhibition at Il-Ħaġar | Heart of Gozo Museum: a landmark Ġużeppi Briffa retrospective bringing together under one roof a large cross-section of works – no fewer than 110 – by this remarkably prolific artist, presenting his talent across its many facets. These include his work for churches, his assured draughtsmanship, his painterly sensibility, and his intelligent engagement with popular culture.

Curated by Dr Christian Attard and structured around six thematic anchors, this exhibition proposes that Ġużeppi Briffa’s work occupies a complex mediating position, straddling an intersection that remains, on the one hand, shaped by a late 19th-century demand for clarity and readability and, on the other, by an emerging desire to question the status quo and challenge visual conventions.
