📸 “Smith’s photographic practice constructs narratives of place, relinquishing fixed points of looking as the artist implicates the viewer in a sequence of sites that oscillate between familiarity and newness, here and there.” — Trevor Borg

Reflecting on the work of Joseph P. Smith, Borg considers how place is never fixed in Smith’s images, but continually negotiated — shaped through encounters that shift between familiarity and distance. These photographs act as records of experience, opening spaces where stories are not only seen, but re-read and reimagined.

🗣️ Join us for an Artist Talk & Curatorial Tour on Wednesday 10th June, 5pm-7pm with Joseph P. Smith, Therese Debono, Lisa Gwen Chetcuti, Vince Briffa & Alex Attard.

Therese Debono is a Maltese photographer, visual artist and educator with nineteen years of photographic practice. She lectures in photography at MCAST and the University of Malta, where she also supervises postgraduate students. Her research interests centre on photography, landscape, and the photographic index. Her work was presented at the Malta Biennale 2026, where she was a joint recipient of the Falcon Award for best work.

📸 “There is no face without a story. A face is a story always unfolding, mostly untold. A face is never whole. Yet nothing can be as present as a face, especially when that face is our own.” — Clive Zammit

Reflecting on the work of Joseph P. Smith, Zammit turns to the tension between presence and unknowability in portraiture, where a face is never fixed, but always in motion between what is seen and what is withheld.

Alex Attard is a Maltese photographer whose practice spans personal projects, architectural commissions and photographic publications. His work has been presented in various solo and collective exhibitions in Malta and internationally. Selected works are held in the National Art Collection of Malta and in the collection of Fondazzjoni Kreattività. His project Parallel Existences is part of the permanent display at the Notarial Archives Foundation, reflecting his ongoing engagement with photography as both artistic inquiry and documentary practice.
