If the govt does not want to "disincentivize, punish or burden car drivers", what do we expect? Problem is, that in turn, disincentivizes, punishes and burdens ALL the other alternative mode users. Making it difficult to walk, bike, bus etc.. in fact a hemorrhaging of alternative mode service providers. 8 in 5 years. Which is odd. Because that's EXACTLY the thing you need to promote, to help get people away from car use anyway?
Malta’s vehicle count continued to grow during the second quarter of this year, with more than 3,000 additional licensed vehicles added to the country’s roads in just three months.
New figures published by the National Statistics Office show that the stock of licensed motor vehicles reached 463,734 by the end of June, an increase of 3,086 over the previous quarter.
That works out to a net average increase of 34 vehicles per day.
A total of 7,237 vehicles were newly licensed between April and June. Passenger cars made up the largest share at 58.1%, followed by motorcycles, e-bikes and PA-bikes at 28.6%.
The figures also show that 61% of newly licensed vehicles were brand new, while the remaining 39% were used imports.
Petrol remains Malta’s most common fuel type, powering 58% of all licensed vehicles. Diesel vehicles accounted for 33.5% of the total fleet.
Electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles represented 5.1% of all licensed vehicles, with their numbers continuing to increase. The largest quarterly growth was registered among plug-in hybrid diesel-electric vehicles, which increased by 9.3%.
The NSO also reported that 6,398 vehicles were taken off the road during the quarter, with many either scrapped or garaged.
