Malta Society of Arts

Malta Society of Arts The Malta Society of Arts (MSA) was established in 1852 and is Malta’s oldest institution for promoting arts and crafts.
(1)

Offers courses in Visual, Applied, and Performing Arts all year long. Organises and hosts exhibitions, concerts, events and more. As the nation’s oldest institution for the promotion of the arts and crafts, the Malta Society of Arts (MSA) is considered by many to be an educational and cultural catalyst on the Island. Its 164-year history, in fact, is intertwined with that of many great Maltese and

Gozitan artists who were sponsored through exhibitions or grants to further their artistic studies both locally and abroad. Throughout the years, its work has been given the official recognition and patronage of governors, presidents and archbishops of Malta. Originally known as the Malta Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, the MSA was first founded in 1852. This was the direct result of a letter sent out by the British Secretary of State to the respective administrations in the Imperial Colonies to solicit the founding of an association similar to the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, which is based in London. Throughout the following 164 years, the MSA held various competitions and exhibitions, as well as participated in overseas expositions, and awarded medals to many local and foreign artists. The MSA was also the first institution in Malta to set up a School of Lace; while it pioneered apprenticeship schemes. Meanwhile, in 1933, the Society became the official representative in Malta of the London College of Music, a status which it still holds as its premises are the Malta Centre for the College’s examinations. Through the help of the Maltese Government, contributions, patrons and various other financial sources, the MSA is one of the Island’s leading educational and cultural centres. Within the historic Palazzo de La Salle in Valletta, which has been the official seat of the Society since 1924, the MSA holds various exhibitions by up-coming, as well as renowned, artists; stages various cultural events (including concertos and recitals); and offers classes in a large number of visual, applied and performing arts, from lace-making to Spanish guitar, and from crib-building to wood sculpture.

📣 The exhibition Vertigo by Hui Sun opens at the MSA on Thursday, 28 May 🎨 Curated by Marta Obiols Fornell , the exhibition invites us to explore the painter’s intuitive mind, where perspectives and different planes emerge in harmony beyond the visible.

The exhibition will feature a collection of 10 large paintings, thick layers of oil on canvas, focusing on the artist's 'SILENT SPACE' and 'ABSURDITY AND SERIOUSNESS' series, as well as some smaller paintings.

All are welcome to visit the exhibition and attend the opening evening on May 28th 6:30pm. See you there!

"Are you new?"

It's a question we hear at events all over the world.

Hardly. LCME has been here since 1887. We were founded on 10 March that year by G. Augustus Holmes, a London-based organist and composer. His idea was simple, but radical for the time: music education should be accessible and affordable for everyone, no matter their background.

Nearly 140 years later, that same idea still shapes everything we do.

Today, as part of the University of West London, we run music, drama and communication exams in more than 55 countries. We offer digital exam options that reach candidates we couldn't have imagined in Victorian London. Our syllabuses celebrate diverse voices, traditions and styles.

Established in history. Never bound by it.

So next time someone asks "are you new?" — we have a simple answer. "Only since 1887."

What is your first memory of LCME?
