Malta Youth Orchestra

Malta Youth Orchestra The MYO made its first public appearance in December 2004 during a concert held at the President’s Palace in Valletta under the direction of Michael Laus.

We aim to:
👉 skill Malta’s talented young orchestral musicians, while giving them opportunities to develop their ambition and aspirations.
👉 nurture a sense of professionally in our young musicians. The Malta Youth Orchestra (MYO) aims to skill Malta’s talented young orchestral musicians, while giving them opportunities to develop their ambition and aspirations. Operating in collaboration with the

MPO Academy, the MYO nurtures a sense of professionality in our young musicians, through regular rehearsals, workshops, masterclasses and performances with local and international music tutors. Between 2011 and 2014 the MYO rehearsed regularly under the direction of conductor Joseph Vella, and has since then been working with a number of prominent local and international conductors, including Peter Stark, Robert Hodge, Kelly Kuo, Michalis Economou, Sergey Smbatyan, Pablo González and Darrell Ang. Despite being essentially a student orchestra, the MYO tackles core classical repertoire spanning several centuries and genres. The MYO has been busily engaged since its conception in various concerts including participation during Notte Bianca, Christmas concerts, bespoke performances for the ŻiguŻajg International Arts Festival for Children and Young People and the highly successful MPO-MYO Side by Side Concerts. MYO musicians often perform alongside musicians of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, fulfilling one of the MYO’s purpose of being an aspirational milestone for Malta’s young musicians, helping to nurture them into becoming the future musicians of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and ultimately the catalysts for our country’s cultural development.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Maestro Aurelio Belli, Head of Operations within the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra.

Aurelio was more than a leader; he was a pillar of the Maltese musical landscape. His dedication to the arts and his vision for the orchestra have left an indelible mark on our culture. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and the entire MPO community during this difficult time. His legacy will continue to resonate through every note played in the halls he loved so dearly. Rest in peace.

Most Conductors would learn a concerto by heart, but not many will learn every piece Brahms and even Smetana ever wrote. Maestro Michael Laus does just that,...

What an exciting and inspiring week it has been for our MYO and JMYO musicians! ✨🎶

On the 25th February, we organised a wellbeing session for our young musicians, presented by Osteopath Mr Amos Simon. It was brilliant, practical, and incredibly instructive for both our juniors and youth members. Supporting our students’ physical wellbeing is just as important as nurturing their musical growth, and this session truly made a difference.

On the 28th February, we then welcomed Mr Robert Plane for a clarinet masterclass — an absolutely fantastic experience! Our juniors and youths were fully engaged and deeply inspired. His artistry, insight, and encouragement were truly motivational for everyone involved.
Amidst everything happening in the world around us, it is refreshing and reassuring to come together through music — a cultural and educational space that is pure, heartfelt, and grounding for the soul, heart, and mind.

The culmination of this beautiful week was seeing the programme notes for Falstaff published in the Manoel Theatre opera booklet, written by Ms Amy Falzon, our very own MYO violinist. What pride and joy to witness a young talent contributing to the cultural scene with such professionalism and knowledge. 🌟

And the excitement continues!
Next week, we look forward to seeing many of our supporters at the MYO concert at Sir Temi Zammit Hall: “From Carmen to Neverland”, under the baton of Mro Robert Hodge . 🎼✨ Pre concert talk by Dr Rebecca Farrugia Hall - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Your support means the world to our young musicians. Join us as we celebrate their dedication, passion, and artistry.

We are truly proud of our young generation and will continue striving to support them as they pursue their musical and artistic dreams, even amidst the busyness of everyday life.

Onwards and upwards! 🎻🎶
