湖中水仙Salmacis(薩耳瑪西斯)看到他後瘋狂的愛上了他。
“Hermaphroditus”, is the name of an androgynous Greek deity who is the son of Hermes and Aphrodite, the name being a combination of the two parents’ names. Legend has it that Hermaphroditus was originally a handsome young man who, while walking through a forest, stopped at a lake to look at his reflection in the water. The lake nymph Salmacis saw him and fell madly in love with him. But Hermaphroditus rejected her. To escape Salmacis' advances, he jumped into a river. But Salmacis, who was hiding behind a tree, jumped in with him, caught him in her arms and began to kiss him. Salmacis prayed to the gods to be united with Hermaphroditus forever. The gods granted her wish, and Hermaphroditus became hermaphroditic.
Hermaphroditus represents the reflection of the complex yin and yang qualities between male and female, the “I” in the “You”, the “You” in the “I” and the “she” in the “he”, and vice versa. The reflection mirrors the relationships in which we love and hate, and is a representation of the identity of any person in the relationships we live in. It is this multiplicity of human expressions in relationships that Woolf explored in her work on the idea of “androgyny”. She boldly experiments with stream-of-consciousness techniques in her writing, depicting the implicit expression of her characters' thoughts through internal monologues, ignoring the usual narrative structure and expressing the artistic form of metaphysical poetry in prose, with a strong sense of lyricism and mystery.
