World Cassowary Day – September 26
🐦🌿 Among the many unique and fascinating bird species found around the world, the Cassowary is a remarkable flightless bird known for its large body and distinctive appearance. Cassowary are mainly found in the tropical rainforests of northern Australia and New Guinea. 🌳
🪶 Cassowary have large bodies covered with dark black feathers. Their necks and heads have striking blue and red skin, while their heads feature a hard, helmet-like structure called a “casque.” This is one of the most distinctive characteristics of the cassowary. 🐦
🏃♂️ Although cassowary cannot fly, they have extremely strong legs and can run very fast. Each foot has long claws, and the inner toe has a particularly long and sharp claw, making the cassowary a potentially dangerous wild bird. However, cassowary do not normally intend to attack humans. They generally react defensively when they feel threatened.
🍎 Cassowary mainly feed on fruits, but they also eat plant matter, fungi, and small insects. By eating fruits and spreading the seeds to different areas through their droppings, they help plants reproduce and regenerate throughout the forest. For this reason, cassowary are often described as “seed dispersers of the forest.” 🌱
🥚 Cassowary also have a unique breeding system. Females are larger than males and are usually more brightly colored. After the female lays her eggs, the male incubates them and takes care of the chicks himself. This is one of the cassowary’s distinctive parental behaviors. 💚
🌳 Today, cassowary face a number of threats, including deforestation, habitat loss, the expansion of roads and human settlements, attacks by dogs, and other human activities. Therefore, protecting and conserving their natural habitats is essential.
💚 On World Cassowary Day, let us learn more about the important role cassowary play in the natural environment and encourage everyone to work together to protect wildlife and conserve our precious natural environment. 🐦🌿
