Aung Cheimt was one of the leading figures of the modern poetry movement in Myanmar. He passed away in 2021, having lived his entire life as a true poet. He devoted himself solely to poetry—never pursuing anything beyond it—and his life itself became a reflection of his poetic process. Over his lifetime, he published thousands of poems, leaving a profound influence not only on poets but also on visual artists.
In 2013, the internationally acclaimed artist Chan Aye collaborated with Aung Cheimt in a unique project. Aung Cheimt first inscribed his favorite poem on a white canvas, after which Chan Aye created his artwork upon it. It was not an illustration of poetry, but rather a genuine collaboration between word and image, a meeting of two spirits.
Among his companions was the artist .mz , whose works graced the covers of some of Aung Cheimt’s books. After the poet’s passing, Min Zaw honored him with a portrait painted in his own distinct style—a remembrance born of friendship and respect.
Though Aung Cheimt’s poems carried him to the heart of a movement and secured his place in the lineage of modern literature, his daily life was marked by hardship. He lived with little money, often in struggle, yet never surrendered to it. He walked only the path he believed in, guided by poetry alone.
Aung Cheimt was a rare figure—someone who lived and created entirely for poetry. His legend will never fade, and his voice will forever remain strong.
