သူဇာလင်း
I would like to share a little about my personal connection with traditional handloom weaving in Tavoy.
When I was young, whenever I travelled from my village to Tavoy, especially when passing through Let Wae Kyun Village at the entrance to Tavoy, I would always hear the rhythmic sounds of handlooms. It was such a pleasant sound to listen to. I was so curious about what those sounds were that I even asked about them. However, by the time I attended college in Tavoy, I noticed that those sounds had almost completely disappeared.
Coincidentally, last year, Ma Phyu Ei Thein from Sunflower Natural Dye Textiles participated in a textile exhibition celebrating the 50th Anniversary of New Zealand–ASEAN Relations. During the exhibition, she discovered similarities between traditional Tavoy weaving patterns and the traditional weaving patterns of the Māori people. She then decided to make a showcase with traditional Tavoy patterns fabric at the exhibition, which led us to begin producing traditional Tavoy handwoven textiles.
At that time, when I reached out to people in Tavoy to look for a handloom, I was surprised and deeply concerned to learn that at Daw Hla Weaving Workshop in Let Wae Kyun, now known as Lunn Shwe War Weaving Workshop, there was only one weaver and one remaining handloom.
This made us seriously concerned that Tavoy’s traditional handloom weaving heritage, which has existed for more than a century, might soon disappear. We therefore decided that we needed to do whatever we could to preserve it. This was how this project was initiated.
When we talk about preservation, it does not mean simply waiting until a tradition disappears and then keeping its records in a museum, although documentation is also very important. Supporting and strengthening what remains today, and helping it continue in a sustainable way, is also an important form of preservation.
Long-term preservation begins with valuing and cherishing the craft. However, maintaining a traditional industry through passion and love alone is not easy. It requires many resources, including funding, people, time, knowledge, skills, and technology.
This six-month project was carried out as an initial step. Today, from having only one remaining handloom in Tavoy, Lunn Shwe War Weaving Workshop now has five handlooms. In addition, a new weaving workshop with a new handloom called “Tavoy Lun-Ee” has also emerged.
We now have 10 members of a new generation who have developed an interest in, and appreciation for, handloom weaving and are actively learning the handloom weaving and textiles. This is an important first step towards preserving traditional Tavoy weaving techniques.
However, preservation alone is not enough. It is equally important to ensure that the tradition continues to grow and develop sustainably. I believe that this initial effort can become a foundation for the future, and that the continued support and assistance of everyone here will play an important role in ensuring that Tavoy’s traditional handloom weaving heritage continues to live on.
During these six months, we did our best with the time and resources available to us, and that effort has brought us to where we are today. We faced many challenges along the way, and it is because we worked together to overcome them that we are able to celebrate the achievements we see today.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the people of New Zealand for supporting this six-month “Empowering Dawei (Tavoy) Handloom Weaving Industry Project,” including this exhibition, through the New Zealand Embassy Fund.
I would also like to extend my special thanks to Ms. Stephanie Lee, Head of Mission at the New Zealand Embassy Yangon, Myanmar, Ms. Meghan Stuthridge, who served as Deputy Head of Mission from 2023 to 2025; Ms. Rapunzel De Leon, the current Deputy Head of Mission; Ma Su Myat; and all the staff of the New Zealand Embassy in Yangon.
During this project period, we were also able to publish a documentation book on traditional Tavoy handloom patterns, titled “Heritage - Weaving – Tavoy Patterns.”
On behalf of the project, I would like to express my special thanks to all those who contributed traditional textiles and longyi for the book and for the exhibition’s historical display, as well as those who shared their knowledge and information about traditional Dawei handloom weaving.
Our sincere thanks go to Daw Hnin Shwe, Chairperson of the Tavoy Township Handloom Weavers Association, master weaver and owner of a weaving workshop from Man-Yat Village; U Kyaw Win, Chairperson of the Weaving Cooperative Association; U Maung San; Daw Su Su Lwan, owner of Shwe Oh Awe Tavoy Power Loom Weaving House; U Yu Swan from Kamyawkin Village and Daw Kyin Sein from Kamyawkin Village, U Ko Ko Naing, Daw Shwe Lin, U Zayar Min, U Aung Win Ko, U Hla Thein, Daw Hla May and Daw Thandar Wai from Yangon.
I would also like to give special thanks to Daw Wah Wah Thant and Daw Mya Ei Phyo for compiling the information for the book, and to Naw Demona Khu from “Ah Phyay” for providing valuable advice on the contents of the book.
Furthermore, my heartfelt thanks go to U Ngwe Lone and Daw Ni Ni Hlaing, owners of Lunn Shwe War Weaving Workshop. Even before the project began, they were already committed to passing traditional Dawei weaving knowledge on to the next generation, and they provided the necessary support throughout the three-month training period.
I would also like to express my deep gratitude to master weaver Daw Aye Aye Mu, who patiently taught and passed down traditional Dawei weaving techniques to the trainees.
Special thanks also go to U Maung Maung Myo Sein for conducting the Color and Design Training and for designing and preparing the layout of the Tavoy Patterns book, as well as to Daw Phyu Ei Thein and Daw Khin Lai Lai Phyu from Sunflower for conducting the Yarn Theory, Natural Dye, and Handloom Weaving training sessions.
In addition, I would like to thank the Mula Art Gallery and its team for their support in making this exhibition possible; the craft entrepreneurs from Yangon who collaborated and participated in the exhibition, the weavers from Paungde who joined us and provided their support, Artist U Maung Maung Thein (Pathein) who provide the Art and Sayama Ma Ei, who honored the exhibition with her poem, “Second Heart.”
Finally, my deepest gratitude goes to all the trainees who persevered through the three-month weaving training without giving up, as well as to everyone who participated in the Natural Dyeing, Color, and Design training.
I would also like to give special thanks to Daw Phyu Ei Thein and all the members of the Sunflower team, who worked tirelessly and with great dedication, even in the face of many challenges, to make this project a success.
Above all, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to everyone who contributed in every possible way with their time, effort, words, encouragement, and support to make this project possible and successful.
Thank you very much.
