Triassic Petrified Wood Items
Location: Ambilobe - Madagascar

The majority of our petrified wood items are from the coniferous species Araucaria which are mined in the Ambilobe region of Madagascar. The tree ring is nicely preserved while all other organic matter are replaced by other minerals such as iron, copper, manganese or quartz which in varying concentration during petrification gives the uniqueness of patterns of petrified wood.

AMMONITES.

Sharing the same extinction date as the dinosaurs, ammonites from Madagascar once thriving (almost 300 millions years) in the coastal areas (65 millions years ago) where they have been collected.

These beautiful ammonites have been formed, by deposition of many sediment layers after the animal died and sunk on the seabed, and most importantly the precipitation of minerals inside the many chambers of the ammonites, on solidification created the uniqueness of each ammonites.

Either cut/polished by our trained artisans or whole, we have carefully selected our ammonites for their perfection in polishing, cutting, shape or colour.

Highly detailed/unprocessed FOSSIL FISH.

Very old fish from the Triassic Rare fish and are only found in a few places; preserved in a hard concretions, they are absolute wonders. No polishing, cutting or any type of processing done on these fossils. The concretions have only been cracked open to reveal the highly detailed fossil inside.

The fossilization of the triassic fish of Madagascar is often in three dimensions, the body of the fish is fossilized with many details of the internal and external organs visible in part or complete such as: the eye and the optic muscle of the eye, the plates that make up the head, the scales of the skin, the fins, jaws and teeth. All these pieces are clearly visible on this type of fish. The top of the palate and its teeth are funnel-shaped on these fish jaws and teeth are often visible. The fins and tail are rarely preserved in these fossils. If the nodules are often glued, it is because they are very difficult to open with the first hammer blow, the nodules are very hard and must be opened in place, because many nodules do not contain anything from the inside.
