sm.ART was founded 2002 in San Francisco, California, by Sibylle Mueller. 2003 saw the opening of its first dedicated exhibition space in Munich, Germany, with a private preview of the exhibition of San Francisco-based photographer Mona Kuhn at gallery "Galerie Charles Schumann" in Munich. sm.ART currently represents more than 20 - mostly emerging, but also established - American contemporary arti
sts in diverse media (photography, painting, drawing, sculpture, prints, video, etc.) with special emphasis on artists from San Francisco & New York, and acts as their - in most cases - exclusive European representative. As common characteristics the viewer may often find a certain serenity, silence, inwardness. In addition to being shown in exhibitions at galleries and art centers throughout the United States, many sm.ART artists have also been featured in and subsequently included in the collections of renowned art institutions such as New York's Whitney Museum of American Art, the MoMA or the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. They have been featured in reviews and articles of leading publications such as the New York Times, Art News or Art in America, have published books and catalogues, or hold prestigious teaching positions. sm.ART sees itself as agent for current positions of American contemporary art, and is thereby seeking to contribute to the cultural exchange between the continents.
