✨ Meet Mohammed El Mourid , one of our artists in residence at the Pulse of Art Residency, held here at Al Maqam during the .
His work delves into memory, matter, and impermanence, using organic materials and unconventional processes to question our relationship with time and the traces we leave behind.
Mohammed El Mourid, born in 1966 in Ifrane, currently lives and works between Strasbourg and Marrakech. A graduate in Visual Arts from Strasbourg, his practice has been shaped by numerous international residencies. His work is defined by a constant exploration of the mineral world and a multimedia approach, incorporating video, photography, and installation.
He continuously experiments with the interaction between image—whether screen-printed or photographic—and atypical materials, such as animal skins, blocks of frozen milk, and pebbles.
His research led him to develop a personal technique: a unique print on tanned skins, resulting in a nomadic, raw surface where modernity and tradition converge. Inspired by Arte Povera, El Mourid explores the sensorial qualities of skins—their scent, sound potential, and gradual decay—infusing his work with a deep connection to life and transformation.
These living materials carry plural histories: the story of the sacrificed animal, of the communities who used skins for survival and music, and of the artist himself, who reclaims this heritage to reflect on memory, time, and materiality. Through this layered narrative, Mohammed El Mourid invites us into a subtle meditation on ephemerality and the marks left behind.
