As designers, we can’t abstain to talk about the importance of the evolution of games’ graphics that can be considered as a collision of art and science since they include many forms of traditional artistic expressions, from illustrations, 3D modelling, to narrative arcs and dynamic music, is it truly the case ?
Passing from the text based games, that used graphic characters instead of vector graphics that used geometrical primitives such as points, lines and curves… to the most advanced 3D games.
The main question here is, through the development of video games through time to the current advanced level that it has reached, can video games be considered as art?
Some say that being immersed in a nice-looking digital field of virtual flowers, or getting a rush from exchanging gunfire between online players does not in itself qualify a game as art. There are plenty of games that never intend to be art. In fact, most games are made with the sole purpose of creating income. While this is not evil in itself, it is not art.
And some others say that Video games are a medium of mediums. Composers create soundtracks and effects, artists create 2D images and 3D models, writers draft story arcs and dialogue, and programmers choreograph all the moving pieces into a seamless world. The art is a hodgepodge of art. The players/audience experience the games in a first person sort of way…
Whilst the controversial question about games as art or not is still on, games can be considered as a great form of immersive visual storytelling that can get you inspired…
