ll kick off with the 2nd International Sigulda Jazz Festival at Sigulda Medieval Castle on Saturday, June 2, 2012. Featured will be the finest Latvian musicians as well as international acts.
“Jazz is the Teacher, Funk is the Preacher” may be the words of James Blood Ulmer, but this line for one day will become the slogan of the festival, where visitors will enjoy the sounds of the smooth jazz, fusion, big band and certainly the Funk! The hosts claim that there will be no academic approach to jazz, as it can be heard in the concert halls and hence, the audience can wait for an informal atmosphere, with the Sigulda castle ruins in the background. Apparently, the town, which is full of musical traditions, can definitely make each visitor feel special. The festival offers a full package to the music lovers: related activities will be found throughout the venue all day long, starting with the possibility to buy music albums at a reasonable prices and visit photo exhibition dedicated to jazz and blues. Apart from this, the Jazz movie room in the venue premises will showcase documentaries about jazz history and development, and, additionally, it will also hold a master-classes conducted by festival artists. Vinyl lovers will have a chance to discover treasures at VinylShop. A festival merchandise booth as well as several cafes will be glad to serve the visitors. People with special needs kept in mind – dedicated parking spots and concert seating; free entrance for assistants. The grand finale is the ‘A’ train (after Duke Ellington's 'Take the A Train'), which will depart from Sigulda train station to Riga Central early in the morning, with a Jam Session on board. At the end it has to be said that a day in Sigulda Jazz 2012 offers a wonderful opportunity to feel the creative energy of music, because there is hardly another environment than nature, which can portray the improvisation level that jazz music gives.
