Survival Kit

Survival Kit

is an annual international contemporary art festival in Riga, organized since 2009 by the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art. Born as a response to the economic crisis, the festival invites curators and artists from around the world each year to imagine alternative survival scenarios and reflect on contemporary society’s development. An essential part of the festival’s identity is its choice of venues - often vacant or abandoned buildings in Riga - which explores their potential and strategies for urban development.

🟡 SURVIVAL KIT 17 ➡️ ARROW OF THE WIND: ON ARTISTS AND HEALERS

📍28 August – 27 September, Riga

🟡 We are excited to announce that this year’s annual international contemporary art event – Survival Kit – will be curated by Elena Sorokina and Simona Markel Dvorák in collaboration with the Initiative for Practices and Visions of Radical Care!

The festival explores the shared terrain between art and healing – spanning therapy, incantation and ritual, physical and mental healthcare, and spiritual restoration – bringing together artists for whom art and healing are mutually sustaining forces and living practices.

The curatorial concept is rooted in Latvian folklore, ancestral healing knowledge, and ritual practices closely tied to the land – forests, lakes, the Baltic Sea, and peat bogs – and celebrates their resilience and ongoing vitality despite historical attempts to suppress them.

💬 “In today’s complex geopolitical situation, it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain mental and emotional balance. The constant presence and escalation of wars are causing ever-greater physical suffering and loss. “Survival Kit 17” centers on care – an essential element of survival in today’s world. Caring for one another is also an indicator of a society’s maturity. We truly need a society capable of caring and critical thinking, and art has always been an invaluable tool for stimulating these processes.”
– Solvita Krese, the festival’s founder and creative director, reflects on the festival’s central concept.

🟡 SURVIVAL KIT 17 ➡️ VĒJA BULTA: PAR MĀKSLU UN DZIEDINĀŠANU

📍28.augusts–27.septembris, Rīga

🟡 Priecājamies izziņot – ikgadējā starptautiskā laikmetīgās mākslas notikuma "Survival Kit" izstādi šogad kūrēs Elena Sorokina un Simona Markel Dvorák kopā ar Radikālo rūpju prakšu un vīziju iniciatīvu (Initiative for Practices and Visions of Radical Care)!
