"Only by tracing your way back to the beginning
can you glimpse where your future might lead?
He sat across from me in a Tbilisi café—
his voice, rough as sandpaper, brushed with velvet,
his eyes were black and burning with focus.
I listened, thinking I understood.
The evening slipped away early,
leaving me to drift into a sleep without demands.
The woman who’d kept me company vanished
after a gentle, unhurried kiss beneath the bridge.
The next morning, I woke with a fierce longing.
I twisted in bed, pressing myself into the mattress,
searching for the night once more.
Light spilled across my back as I rose.
In the mirror, when the fog lifted from the cracked glass,
I saw a face marked by experience.
I reached out and wrote with my fingertip:
Never again will I return, never.
The goal could not be more explicit than this—
Mist fading away, a purpose that no longer exists.
I stripped bare and began to paint
the great milk-white canvas gray."
