> 22 October – 29 November 2026

The exhibition Anyway presents recent works by Martin Paaskesen (*1987, DK), represented by Valerius Gallery since 2018, and marks his sixth exhibition with the gallery.

Painting comes before the image. Working directly on raw canvas, Paaskesen builds each surface from hundreds of patches and fragments. Animals, objects and fragments of language emerge intuitively between abstraction and figuration, shaped as much by chance and imperfection as by deliberate choice. Nothing can be undone, only integrated.

Martin Paaskesen is a Danish artist born in Aarhus in 1987, living and working in Copenhagen. Initially trained as an actor at the Danish National School of Performing Arts, he discovered painting during his studies. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at HEART – Herning Museum of Contemporary Art, California Institute of the Arts as well as at numerous international art fairs. He received a Working Grant from Statens Kunstfond – the Danish Arts Foundation – in 2019 and 2026.

The exhibition Anyway presents recent works by Martin Paaskesen (*1987, DK), represented by Valerius Gallery since 2018, and marks his sixth exhibition with the gallery.

In this show, Martin Paaskesen explores doubt as both an artistic driving force and an inherent part of being human. Rather than something to overcome, doubt becomes a space for searching: questioning choices, following impulses and allowing a work to develop without knowing where it will lead.

Painting comes before the image. Working directly on raw canvas, Paaskesen builds each surface from hundreds of patches and fragments. Animals, objects and fragments of language emerge intuitively between abstraction and figuration, shaped as much by chance and imperfection as by deliberate choice. Last week to discover ANNi MERTENS’ solo show at the gallery! ⚙️

A cylinder, a box, a tube. Familiar shapes are stacked, turned, cut apart and pushed into new figurations. A ceramic form can sort of look like rubber, a crate can nearly become a building block. The humour lies in these small shifts, where something familiar is pushed just far enough to become slightly absurd.

On view in ‘Sort of, Nearly, Suddenly’, until 18 October.

’s compositions exist at the intersection of geology, landscape and painting. Interested in how raw materials shape and transform territories, she draws from sites such as quarries to create compositions reminiscent of ground maps and satellite views.

Her paintings can be seen as memories of a place — landscapes that are as tangible as the materials they are made of.

Works shown in ‘Hallelujah! God is a Woman Vol. 2’, 16 July — 12 September 2026

ANNI MERTENS – SORT OF, NEARLY, SUDDENLY

> 17 September – 17 October

The exhibition ‘Sort of, Nearly, Suddenly’ presents recent works by Anni Mertens (*1995, LU) and marks her first solo exhibition at the gallery.

Things are rarely what they seem in Mertens’ work. Her sculptures appear soft, elastic and inflated, yet they are made from fired ceramics. Hard materials take on the appearance of something flexible, playful and slightly unpredictable. Her forms sag, squeeze and lean, seeming almost animated despite their stillness.

SORT OF, NEARLY, SUDDENLY

> 17 September — 17 October 2026

The exhibition Sort of, Nearly, Suddenly presents recent works by Anni Mertens (*1995, LU) and marks her first solo exhibition at the gallery.

Throughout the show, the ceramic cylinder returns again and again, building a visual language that unfolds through space. Each appearance is an echo of the last, reinvented through scale, position and colour. The exaggerated compositions of the sculptures introduce a playful instability, with a nod toward Surrealist objects and soft sculpture. Sort of, Nearly, Suddenly asks us to look twice. What first appears familiar may not behave as expected.
