Exactly 29 years ago in 1997 we had the joy to present Nan Goldin and David Armstrong “Double Vue” their first exhibition together 23 mai - 30 juin in the boulevard Prince Henri Gallery in Luxembourg . featuring their close friendship, the intimacy that shaped their shared world, love and life.
We were overwhelmed by the beauty and emotional power of each image. The exhibition also included Goldin’s “The Ballad of Sexual Dependency “ most famous landmark autobiographical slideshow that redefined photography, since the 1980’s
Nan and David arrived a little late for the opening from Amsterdam where they landed in the morning, We sent a car to pick them up - the driver was slow - she said - and was a little tired - David charmingly made us all feel happy. They loved the dinner, Nan was puzzled by Rina Colbach a collector; world traveller, a terrific independent eccentric friend of the gallery - if the word “dandy” would exist in feminine it would have suited her perfectly. After the dinner we went back to the gallery : she loved the show and loved the projection.
When Roger Wagner arrived with his tremendous motorbike (not a Harley Davidson, but something similar) Nan went for a ride with Roger through the city - not larger than “my bloc on the Bowery” - she said - The night was warm. Both David and Nan loved Hotel Cravat - the favorite of
nearly all of my artists in those years. They took a flight to Paris in the next morning. The show was an awesome success. Several Nan Goldin’s and David Arstrong’s remained in Luxembourg private collections, though collectors came from everywhere, they loved the off beat surprise and the energy of the moment.
A tender thought to Yvon Lambert who helped to make this exhibition happen.
so many things changed since then.
