One day one day

I was invited for a writing session during my last visit to Nigeria. It was a room full of 8 persons just juggling ideas. 3 songs in, Obi asked me a question that was very interesting.

“Why can’t you sing the way you’ve written and recorded the demos for us? You’re so good at it. You kept asking for Yoruba words and slangs; The accent is even like you’re one of us and see how good all the songs are.”

I replied: Bro…. I’ve tasked myself with what I do. This is the path I chose. You have yours and we have ours.
How many artists do you guys have here in Nigeria?
Even if I do your type of music with that accent, I’ll always feel like an outsider within myself.
I have a mission and I wanna go out fulfilling my purpose and not be just another one from the bunch. Someday, we’ll have a chair at the table too. I used to be a hip hop artist before I started singing but I felt I was called to do what I do now so it’s destiny i guess.

Obi: ok that’s a valid reason but just one song.

I laughed and replied…. I really don’t see the possibility 😊
