Liberia’s Dilemma

Liberia can be likened to a young woman caught in a cycle of abuse. Whenever she finds a suitor, he promises her the world at her feet. However, all she ever gets is being r***d, abused, misused, and trampled on.

Her current suitor promised her respect, love, and friendship because they shared the same indigenous background. Sadly, her abuse is far more than she can bear. This new suitor ensures that she cuts her ties to every relationship she ever formed. All her resources are taken away frequently.

She seems to have lost hope in relational support. She is skeptical of even those offering their hands in marriage to her again. They seem to care more about their degrees and titles than her plight. Even though they claim to love her more than her current suitor, they can’t seem to make the sacrifice necessary to rescue her from the daily abuse.

Oh, Liberia! How will you navigate this dilemma?

Did you know that Egypt 🇪🇬 produces smartphones and tablets locally since 2018?

The Egyptian company, SICO Technology, plans to assemble devices for other companies and increase its exports to Africa, with the production of more than two million devices of various brands in 2022, according to Bloomberg.

SICO is the first Egyptian company to manufacture smart phones, 20 percent of which is owned by the Egyptian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, and it has factories near Cairo and in Assiut.

The company recently started manufacturing smart phones for Indian 🇮🇳 and Chinese 🇨🇳 companies, and will also produce other devices such as: TVs, satellite receivers, and electronic payment devices, according to CEO Mohamed Salem.

SICO produces its own brand of Nile X for mobile phones that sell for as low as $80.

It aims to produce more than two million devices of various brands in 2022, compared to 1.5 million devices in 2021, according to Salem.

The Egyptian company sells its mobile devices and tablets in the Arab Gulf countries, France 🇫🇷 and Rwanda 🇷🇼 , and exports between 15 and 20 thousand units annually.

SICO is seeking to export its products to four other African countries, namely Tanzania 🇹🇿 , Liberia 🇱🇷 , Mauritania 🇲🇷 and Namibia 🇳🇦 , in the coming months.

Laughter: A Healing Balm

In late July, my husband and I traveled to Nigeria to celebrate my fabulous friend’s birthday. While there, we were assigned a lovely driver called Donnie. On the last day of our time in Lagos, Donnie had to take us to the airport. If you have been to Lagos, Nigeria, traffic is a considerable challenge. Though we were on time, Donnie wanted to ensure we arrived earlier than required for a smooth check-in.

While driving—the traffic was heavy—Donnie tried to cut off a female driver. Every time he attempted to get in front of her, she accelerated and gave him an angry look. I was concerned that it would get ugly, but Donnie kept laughing after each failed attempt, and the woman seemed to be getting more irate. After a few minutes of this back and forth, Donnie drove close to her and rolled down his glass. She immediately brought hers down, ready to charge at him. Still laughing, he said, “Good morning, madam.” She glared at him, but he just kept laughing. Eventually, she burst into laughter and proceeded to give Donnie the way—the tension was squashed.

I kept thinking about the moment and how a burst of infectious laughter could deescalate a tense situation. We live in a time when many people are constantly angry due to acute hardships in all facets of life. If only we could breathe and smile in moments of tension before responding, imagine how many pains we would avert and how many injuries we could stop.

Laughter is indeed a healing balm! Laugh a lot this week. Life is not that serious. Whatever you are facing will pass.

According to Buckingham Palace, the Queen of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth realms has passed off.
