On 15 March Kobe at Water’s Edge celebrated their 6th anniversary. It was a super evening with delicious food as always.

I’ve dined at Kobe several times and enjoyed them all, the midweek buffet and the teppan dinner cooked in front of us. Manager Anil and team are wonderful, welcoming hosts so when I heard about a celebratory buffet I was there!

We were greeted and seated then treated to a welcome cocktail, blue with a sake base, refreshing and it whet our appetites for the buffet.

The starters offered salmon and tuna sashimi, both wonderfully fresh and tasty. There was a selection of sushi including salmon or prawn nigiri, several maki and more, including a delicious volcano maki with prawn and crab. We pretty much ignored the other side of the starters (why have cucumber if you can have salmon nigiri?) but had the seared tuna which was amazing.

On to the hot dishes. I had a bowl of ramen with egg and seaweed, and a couple of gyoza dumplings, large but soft and tasty. And I think we tried everything. There was excellent okonomiyaki; the ebi tempura were beautifully light and crispy. The chicken karaage and fried fish were tender and juicy too. We had a tasty beef yanagawa and an inspired nasu saboru served in a brinjal. Plain or fried rice were available, but we passed to save room for the main dishes and dessert!

The dessert selection was also varied. There were non-Japanese treats like chocolate mousse and panna cotta, and some adapted favourites like macaroons, eclairs or opera cake, with macha, green tea or wasabi. Maybe one day we’ll see some genuine Japanese sweets like Castella or Mochi, but for now the cakes worked well and were tasty, particularly the éclair and cheesecake!

It was a super dinner in a chilled ambience and we loved it. And yes, I went to the cold and hot buffets twice, but only once to desserts!

This was an anniversary dinner, but you don’t have to wait a year to try it yourself. Kobe has a dinner buffet on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, with all the classics and I’d recommend it.

Congratulations to the Kobe team for six years of well-deserved success, wish you many more – and see you again soon for another delicious dinner

Brunch. Surf & Turf. Sangria. What a superb combination, I had to try it...and I did!

This brunch is at the Courtyard by Marriott's Beira Kitchen. What makes this different? As well as the varied international buffet stations there are also live cooking stations: one for the surf (seafood), one for the turf (meats) and of course one for the sangria, with a choice of three. I kept to the red, but the others looked good too.

I started light with some cold starters (loved the prawn tartlet) and moved on to some seafood salad, smoked chicken, terrine (very nice) and pate. By then, fueled by my first sangria I tried the freshly grilled "surf" which was excellent, tasty and tender. The "turf" was good too, though I left room for another sangria and the main buffet where I tried some roast pork with lovely crispy crackling, chicken and of course my daily veggies (the pumpkin curry was fantastic). I would have gone back for more, but I was getting full!

I didn't think I would have room for dessert, but the chocolate fountain beckoned (come on, who wouldn't?) and some other goodies - loved the cheesecake.

Overall it was a very enjoyable Sunday brunch. The surf and turf live cooking stations added nicely to the buffet; the buffet itself has a reasonable selection, more than enough for a good brunch and of course the sangrias add a lovely Mediterranean flavour to the overall ambience.

There was also some nice live music courtesy of Manethree on the day that I went, which added nicely to the atmosphere.

I’ve been getting one of these for my lunch at least twice a week for a couple of months now and still do, and still enjoying it.

When Cafe Kinross launched a selection of set lunches, it caught my eye for several reasons: there was a decent variety – rice and curry is there but also meatballs, teriyaki, tortillas and more; the price was reasonable, all between Rs630 and Rs690; and they offer free delivery between Welawatte and Fort.

I’ve probably had the Grilled Chicken with Tortilla most often. The chicken comes in a tasty sauce and is tender and juicy; the hard boiled egg is perfectly done, not at all dry and goes well with the corn & onion salad to make some tasty chicken tortilla wraps. The portion is big enough for a satisfying lunch.

My other go-to is the Teriyaki Chicken which comes with a good portion of steamed rice, and with sides of corn and kangkung. The chicken is very tasty and I particularly like the kangkung which is slightly crunchy and makes a great side to the corn and rice.

Both are very flavoursome without being spicy – there is a little spice but it is subtle. I’ve also tried the chicken meatballs and that was good too, slightly spicier than the other two. Some friends have tried the chili fish and the chili chicken and enjoyed both, and the level of spice.

You need to order by 10.30 to get the free delivery. Payment can be cash or card, the friendly delivery guy comes with a card machine.
This has become my most frequent lunch order and I am sure will be for some time to come. I think the Teriyaki tomorrow…..

Have you tried the Café Kinross lunch? Did you enjoy it too? Let us know what you think.
