🌊🐢 Happy World Sea Turtle Day! 🐢🌊

Today, we celebrate the ancient mariners of the ocean — sea turtles, who have roamed our seas for over 100 million years. These gentle creatures play a huge role in maintaining the health of marine ecosystems, from balancing jellyfish populations to supporting vibrant seagrass beds.

But now, they need our help. With threats like plastic pollution, climate change, illegal trade and habitat destruction. A noll seven species of sea turtles are facing serious challenges — and some are endangered.

🤔Why Post-Harvest Handling is Critical in the Seafood Industry?

Post-harvest technology refers to the techniques and practices used to handle, process and preserve fish and shellfish after they are harvested. It plays a role in several stages of the seafood journey to our plates such as preservation, processing, packaging, storage, handling, transportation and marketing.

🧐But why is this so important?

🐟Seafood is a highly perishable product that can spoil quickly after harvesting. To maintain its freshness and quality until it reaches our plates, it is important to use effective post-harvest techniques.
🐟These practices based on scientific methods and it can extend the shelf life of seafood.
🐟As perishable products, seafood is highly susceptible to contamination by harmful microbes. Contaminated seafood can spread foodborne diseases to consumers, some of which can be fatal. Post-harvest techniques help reduce the risk of bacterial contamination, such as Salmonella and Vibrio.
🐟 Moreover, proper post-harvest handling minimizes waste caused by spoilage and damage, which in turn improves economic returns.
🐟Many international markets also require strict quality control and hygiene standards for seafood.
🐟Post-harvest practices help minimize physical, nutritional and quality losses that can occur during handling, processing, and packaging.
🐟They also contribute to seafood security.
🐟 Most importantly, effective post-harvest practices enhance seafood quality and build consumer trust. This not only impacts product quality but also contributes to higher economic income generation.
🐟These techniques also add value to seafood products. For example, dried seafood and Jaadi are processed and preserved for greater economic worth.
🐟Furthermore, preserving specific seafood products allows for availability during the off-season.
🐟Waste management and reduction are also important in the seafood industry. By-products from seafood can be converted into useful products, generating additional revenue.

🌿 Here it is—the story of wetlands! 🤫

Have you ever wondered about the hidden world where water meets land? Let’s dive into the story of wetlands and discover why they are so important to nature and to us!✨️🌱 wetlands whisper their ancient tales.

These magical ecosystems—swamps, marshes, and mangroves—breathe life into our planet. They cradle newborn fish, shelter rare birds and filter the water we drink and use.

One evening, as the golden sun kissed the water’s edge, a little egret danced among the reeds, searching for tiny fish. Nearby, a mangrove’s tangled roots cradled young crabs, while a chorus of frogs sang the song of the wetlands. But the whispers of the wetlands have turned into pleas—pollution, drainage, and destruction threaten their survival.

If we listen closely, the wetlands ask for our care. They are nature’s protectors, shielding us from floods and nurturing life unseen. Will we protect them in return? Today, on World Wetlands Day, let’s promise to preserve these silent guardians of life. 🌿💧

🦐ඉස්සන් පිසින විට රතු පැහැය ඇති වන්නේ ඇස්ටැක්සැන්ටින් නම් වර්ණකයක් නිසාය. මෙය ඉස්සන්, කකුළුවන්, පොකිරිස්සන් සහ අනෙකුත් ක්‍රස්ටේසීන්ගේ දක්නට ලැබෙන කැරොටිනොයිඩ් වර්ණකයකි. 🦐The red color of shrimp when they are cooked is due to a pigment called astaxanthin. This is a carotenoid pigment found in shrimp, crabs, lobsters, and other crustaceans. Astaxanthin is naturally red but is typically bound to proteins in the exoskeleton and other tissues, causing the shrimp to appear grayish-blue or greenish when they are raw. In raw shrimp, the astaxanthin is bound to proteins called crustacyanin, which masks its red color.When shrimp are cooked, the heat causes the proteins to denature. As the proteins denature, they release the astaxanthin. With the pigment no longer bound to the proteins, its true red color becomes visible.

මුහුදු පැලෑටි ලෝකයේ බහුලව පරිභෝජනය කරයි. නමුත් ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ මුහුදු පැලෑටි දේශීය ප්‍රජාව අතර එතරම් ජනප්‍රිය නොවේ. එය ලෝකයේ බොහෝ කර්මාන්ත සඳහා භාවිතා වේ. ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන් මුහුදු පැලෑටි ගෝලීය වශයෙන් ආහාරයක් ලෙස භාවිතා කරනු ලබන්නේ එහි විශාල පෝෂණ ගුණයක් ඇති බැවිනි.

ජපානය ලෝකයේ වඩාත්ම ප්‍රසිද්ධ මුහුදු පැලෑටි පරිභෝජනය කරන රටයි. ඔවුන් සුෂි, සුප් සහ සලාද සඳහා බහුලව භාවිතා වන නොරි, කොම්බු, වකාමේ වැනි මුහුදු පැලෑටි වර්ග භාවිතා කරයි. චීනයට මුහුදු පැලෑටි පරිභෝජනයේ දිගු ඉතිහාසයක් ඇත. වර්තමානයේ කොරියානු ජනරජයට ද ලෝකයේ විශාල පාරිභෝගිකයින් සිටී. මුහුදු පැලෑටි ඉන්දුනීසියාවේ ආහාර වේලෙහි වැදගත් කොටසකි. විශේෂයෙන්ම වෙරළබඩ ප්‍රදේශවල ප්‍රචලිතය. තායිලන්තය සුප් සහ කෙටි කෑම සඳහා මුහුදු පැලෑටි බහුලව භාවිතා කරයි.
මැලේසියාවේ මුහුදු පැලෑටි සාම්ප්‍රදායික ආහාර සඳහා භාවිතා කරන අතර දැන් එය කෙටි ආහාර සහ සෞඛ්‍යවත් නිෂ්පාදන ලෙස වර්ධනය වන කර්මාන්තයකි. පිලිපීනය සහ වියට්නාමය ද මුහුදු පැලෑටි ආහාරයක් ලෙස භාවිතා කරයි.

Japan is the most famous seaweed consuming country in the world.They use seaweed varieties such as Nori, Kombu, Wakame which are commonly used for sushi, soups and salads.China has a long history of seaweed consumption. Currently The Republic of Korea also has large consumers in the world.Seaweed is an important part of the diet in Indonesia. Especially in coastal areas.Thailand used seaweed often for soups and snacks.
In Malaysia seaweed is used in traditional dishes and now it is a growing industry for snacks and health products.Philippines and Vietnam also use seaweed as a food.
Largest importers of the world are China, Japan, United states, Thailand etc. Seaweed imports as fresh, chilled, frozen or dried seaweed.

Sri Lanka cultivates a wide range of ornamental fish species, including guppies, angelfish, goldfish, koi carp, and various types of tropical freshwater and marine fish.
Sri Lanka exports ornamental fish to various countries, including the United States, Europe, and Asia. The industry contributes to the country's economy through foreign exchange earnings.
There is also a growing domestic market for ornamental fish in Sri Lanka.
Ornamental fish farming in Sri Lanka utilizes both traditional and modern techniques. Fish are often bred and reared in ponds, tanks, or indoor aquariums. Farmers may use natural or artificial breeding methods to produce high-quality fish for sale.
Despite its potential, the ornamental fish farming industry in Sri Lanka faces challenges such as disease outbreaks, water quality management, and limited access to technology and expertise.
