Early Sri Lankan Sculpture
The Timeless Artistic Heritage of the Anuradhapura Civilization
"Sri Lankan sculpture is more than the art of carving stone—it is a living expression of Buddhist culture, spirituality, and artistic excellence."
Sri Lankan sculpture represents one of Asia's most remarkable artistic traditions, with a history spanning over two thousand years. Its foundations were established during the Anuradhapura Kingdom (377 BCE – 1017 CE), following the introduction of Buddhism to the island.
As Buddhism flourished, sculpture became an essential part of religious architecture, cultural identity, and artistic expression. The sculptors of Anuradhapura mastered the ability to transform stone into peaceful, spiritually inspiring works that continue to captivate the world today.

After Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka, the construction of monasteries, stupas, Bodhi shrines, and temples encouraged the rapid development of sculpture.
