ලකළ එ ගහවර, වතළ තරඟ බැම, දියරොනලුයෙන්යුති, නැබළා සළා නැබ, නිල් සෙවෙල වරලැති, වෙරළ පුලිනතල හර සහ නිති රඳන උමඟයන සිරිගති.

(සැදී ඇති එ උතුම් ගඟ, පැතිරුණා වූ රළ නැමැති බැමින් ද, දිය රොන් හෙවත් සීකර නැමැති පැහැයෙන් ද යුත්, මහත් වූ සුළී නැමැති නැබත්, නිල් සෙවෙල නැමැති වරලත් ඇති, වෙරළ බඩ හෙවත් ඇළයේ වැලි තලය නැමැති මෙහෙසුරු හා නිබඳ වැ රඳන්නා වූ උමා ළඳගේ සැටිය ගත්තේයි.)

This painting was inspired by a moment I experienced in Negombo. While observing and capturing my surroundings, I overheard a fishing woman shouting in frustration:
“මුං හිතන් ඉන්නේ, හැම ගෑනිම මිනිහා රස්සාවේ ගිහාම එහෙමයි කියලා.”
This can be loosely translated as: “They think that every fishing woman is willing to be with another man once her husband goes out to sea.”
That single sentence carried a deep weight of judgment, misunderstanding, and social cruelty. It revealed how easily women—especially those from fishing communities—are burdened with unfair assumptions in the absence of their husbands.
This work grew from that moment. I completed the painting nearly a year ago and, until now, had almost forgotten to share its story. Today, it has found its place in a meaningful collection, and I’m grateful that its message continues to live beyond my studio.
