SFG’s vision extends beyond its walls with continued participation in international art fairs across Asia and collaborations with galleries and institutions globally. Saskia Fernando Gallery was established in February 2009 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The gallery expanded in December 2013 to a space where it now stands as the largest contemporary art gallery in the island, housing two exhibition spaces

and a private viewing gallery of over 300 works. Artists represented are either Sri Lankan by nationality or have a connection with the local art scene. In addition to presenting exhibitions monthly in the Colombo space, the gallery has collaborated on exhibitions internationally in London, Dubai and Singapore. Saskia Fernando Gallery has succeeded as the first gallery to professionalize the Sri Lankan contemporary art scene and take the industry forward in marking it’s place as a considerable player in the South Asian art movement. The gallery aims to present two exhibitions per month and continues with international collaborations and projects annually. Our represented artists include the leading established as well as up-and-coming artists in Sri Lanka today.

Unapologetic, bold, and theatrical, Fabienne Francotte’s ad vitam aeternam unravels like a passionate affair, taking the viewer into the tangled tempest of emotions which is love. Tender and violent, the exhibition explores the unpredictable harmony of this emotion. Inspired by the obsession with the experience and love’s expression across time, particularly in South Asia, the artist’s exploration of the subject delves into the layered potency of love's passion and trauma.

Fabienne Francotte (b.1959, Brussels. Lives and works in Colombo, Brussels, and Skopelos) explores the possibilities of fabric, metal, and clay in her engagement with the aftermath of trauma, abuse, and migratory displacement. The artist often draws from her observations and experiences of people around her, including her own—transgressing the boundaries of culture, social, and economic classes. Francotte has concerned herself with a range of social issues present in Sri Lanka, such as education, the s*x industry, and religious tolerance. Francotte's training as a calligrapher is evident in her drawings, which showcase ritualistic ex*****on, balance, and precise, controlled gestures.

‘The underwater world in my work is not a real one, but it opened up a freedom I had not experienced before. In that space, I could alter the scale of objects at will or introduce elements that would not be expected to belong in that environment. There are no limitations. I can create a world that is not bound by any rules.’ - Sandatharaka Abeysinghe

In our latest artist profile, Sandatharaka Abeysinghe shares the beginnings of the magical underwater world from his latest exhibition and the freedom he has discovered in this imaginary landscape. Abeysinghe shares his experiences of growing up in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, and how he has come to find magic around.

Celebrating Ajantha Ranaweera on his birthday!

Ajantha Ranaweera explores structures of political power through figures that inhabit ambiguous, fantastical, and spiritual realms. Drawing inspiration from Sri Lankan mural traditions, and rasa theory, he creates a visual language that bridges tradition and modernity while taking a decolonised approach to knowledge and artistic production.

Stay tuned to learn more about his practice and for updates on his upcoming solo exhibition at our gallery.

The Drawing Biennial 2026 is now open at The Drawing Room in London. Featuring over 300 commissioned artworks, the presentation includes a new drawing, ‘Endless’ by Chandraguptha Thenuwara.

‘Endless’ explores the glitch effect of a TV screen, symbolizing calamities, destruction, war, loss of life, and collective grief. The work continues the artist's exploration of glitch, comparing socio-political issues to the distortions on a television screen when the voltage fluctuates. The idea serves as a metaphor for the interruptions and disruptions in governance that have plagued a nation grappling with its identity amidst economic strife and conflicting ideologies.

It challenges both leaders and citizens to confront the realities of their socio-political existence and to engage in meaningful dialogue about change. The grand promise of peace and unity hangs in the balance, requiring not just identified leadership but an engaged populace willing to question, reflect, and demand genuine accountability. In this intricate dance of hope and despair, the future remains uncertain, but the need for transformation is as urgent as ever.

In Sandatharaka Abeysinghe’s work, magic becomes the anchor that permits the braiding of different time zones, histories, cultures, life forms and memories. We encounter congregations of birds, and bees, costumed performers, who meander through the waters, among trees leading towards a hidden destination. The exhibition unfurls as a celebration that is underway in this land that exists deep under the sea.
