The Natural Resources Management Division of the Ministry of Environment recently organized a unique and engaging environmental awareness street drama at the open-air premises of its headquarters, "Sobadam Piyasa."
Produced under the artistic direction, guidance, and mentorship of Director Thelma Medis of the renowned Theodora Team (Theodora Thelma Theater Foundation), this creative street theater initiative aimed to promote sustainable natural resource management, biodiversity protection, and environmental conservation among the public and ministry staff. Utilizing rhythmic drumming and expressive performance styles to simplify complex environmental crises, a talented group of artists—including Asiri Edirisingha , Isuru Gunawardhana, Robinson, Mahela Chamara, Rashmi Nilanka, Lehara Silve, Nirasa Lakshani, and Dulshan delivered powerful, lifelike portrayals of ecological degradation.
The drama vividly illustrated the loss of fertile topsoil due to chemical misuse and improper land practices, while shedding light on the rapid destruction of natural streams, rivers, and wetlands caused by plastic pollution and industrial dumping. Furthermore, the ensemble shed light on pressing issues like deforestation driven by concrete expansion and the resulting human-wildlife conflicts, effectively reminding onlookers that fresh water and forests are finite resources. By bridging the gap between state environmental policies and civil responsibility, the program inspired the gathered audience and ministry officials to collectively pledge toward reducing single-use plastic, conserving water, and planting trees. Ultimately, this successful production at "Sobadam Piyasa" perfectly demonstrated how the Natural Resources Management Division utilizes creative arts as a vital, high-impact tool for public education and community mobilization.
