This coming fall, and in conjunction with the 21st edition of Ecrans du reel (Doc Screens), Cinematheque Beirut will launch the second cycle of the “Writing on Film” workshop, where young cinephiles are given the space to broaden their understanding of film criticism and writing about films, engaging directly with the program of the Doc Screens Festival.

This workshop will take place in September 2026, offering a group of participants the opportunity to develop and publish film reviews, essays or interviews with the support of the Cinematheque Beirut project.

The workshop will be conducted in Arabic.
The material produced can be in both Arabic and English.

On April 29, Cinematheque Beirut will contribute to the Symposium of the 2026 Congress of the International Federation of Film Archives (Fiaf) « Reimagining African and Arab Film Memory: Methodologies, Collaborations, Restitutions, and Dialogues » at the Cinémathèque marocaine.

Anaïs Farine, Chantal Partamian and Mathilde Rouxel will present the Georges Nasser heritage preservation project. In collaboration between Cinematheque Beirut, Katsakh: Mediterranean Archives, and the Jocelyne Saab Association, this project includes cross-referencing and research, reconditioning and treatment, as well as hands-on workshops and training focusing on the physical realities of film and digital restoration.

في 29 نيسان/أبريل، تشارك "سينماتك بيروت" في الندوة العلمية المنعقدة ضمن مؤتمر عام 2026 لـ "الاتحاد الدولي لأرشيفات الأفلام" (Fiaf)، والتي تحمل عنوان "إعادة تصور ذاكرة السينما الأفريقية والعربية: منهجيات، تعاونات، استردادات، وحوارات"، والمقامة في "السينماتيك المغربية".

ستقوم كل من أنييس فارين، شانتال بارتاميان، وماتيلد روكسيل بعرض مشروع حفظ تراث المخرج جورج نصر. ويشمل هذا المشروع، الذي يأتي كثمرة تعاون بين "سينماتك بيروت" ومشروع "كاتساخ: أرشيفات المتوسط" و"جمعية جوسلين صعب"، عمليات تقاطع المعلومات والبحث، وإعادة التأهيل والمعالجة، بالإضافة إلى ورش عمل تطبيقية وتدريبات تركز على الواقع المادي للفيلم والترميم الرقمي.

Inspired from the Vietnamese revolution, the call to transform every Arab capital into a Haboi for the Palestinian revolution echoed far and wide in the past century’s 1960s and 1970s.
The film tells the story of Hatem Hatem, known by the nom de guerre as Abu Hassan Hanoi.
Throughout the film, which he intended as a letter to his father, Hassan revisits the memory of Fat’h’s Vietnamese moment in Lebanon.

Through archival film and photographic records, Scenes of Extraction by Sanaz Sohrabi creates an archival constellation with still and moving images from the British Petroleum Archives, documenting the expansive colonial network behind British geophysical expeditions across Iran and other British oil operations in South East Asia. The film focuses on the parallel production of geological and ethnographic surveys through amateur geological footage and official technical film surveys produced by BP. It weaves through decades of archival documents to trace the visual history of the “Reflection Seismography” method for oil exploration, heavily tested across the Iranian oil belt despite its destructive and probable nature. Situated at the nexus between science and technology studies and media archaeology, the film traces the technical legacy of these geophysical methods that remain the backbone of the global energy complex.
In collaboration with the Arab Image Foundation, the festival presents One Image, Two Acts (2020) and Scenes of Extraction (2023) by Sanaz Sohrabi, drawing on elements from the archives of British Petroleum during its operations in Iran, Iraq, and Kuwait.

Now, her son revisits this past, delivering a heart-breaking portrait of the anguish of parents who are forced to choose between their children’s physical safety and the emotional upheaval of leaving home.

يستعين المخرج بعدسة والدته في فيلم «ثلاثة وعود» ليتناول قصةً مزدوجة عن أمٍّ تجد نفسها أمام واجب اتخاذ القرار المستحيل بمغادرة الوطن مع عائلتها في ظل تصاعُد حدّة النزاع ومقايضة سلامة الجسد باضطراب النفس من جهة، وعن أمٍّ وابنها يتعاملان مع الأثر الذي حملته هذه التجربة على عائلتهما للمرة الأولى من جهةٍ أخرى. يتمحور الفيلم حول ثلاثة وعود تقطعها سهى مع الله مع تصاعُد حدّة الانتفاضة الفلسطينية الثانية، ويقدّم صورةً حميمة عن تجربة مختلف أفراد العائلة والأدوار التي يؤدونها ضمن وحدة العائلة في أوقات الأزمات. وقد تنطوي أحداث الفيلم على المفاجآت. تُغني هذا الفيلم لحظاتٌ من الفكاهة والمشاورة الحية حول كيفية الوصول إلى برّ الأمان، والشهادة المأساوية على طفلٍ يخسر طفولته.

One Image, Two Acts unravels the multifaceted and intertwined systems of oil infrastructures spanned and accumulated across unlikely geographies and material temporalities. Examining the photographic and film archives of British Petroleum (BP) during its operations in Iran, Iraq, and Kuwait, this film traces the visual and media infrastructures through which oil has operated as an agent of power in the colonial episteme. It unpacks BP’s widespread construction of cinemas in the oil towns of South-Western Iran and follows the transformation of this emergent image economy in contouring the nationalization movement and the anti-colonial cinema between 1950-1980 in Iran.

يحلل فيلم "صورة واحدة، فعلَان" الأنظمة المتعددة والمتداخلة التي تلعب دورًا في بناء شبكات استخراج النفط الممتدة عبر جغرافيات غير متوقعة وزمنيات مادية مختلفة. ويفحص الفيلم الأرشيف الفوتوغرافي والسينمائي لشركة بريتيش بتروليوم (BP) خلال عملياتها التنقيبية في إيران والعراق والكويت، ويتتبع البنى التحتية البصرية والإعلامية التي اشتغلت عبرها شركات النفط كأداة للسيطرة ضمن المنظومة المعرفية الاستعمارية، كما يكشف عن مشاريع كبيرة قامت بها شركة BP في المدن النفطية في جنوب غرب إيران لبناء قاعات سينما، ويتابع تحوّل هذا الاقتصاد الصوري الناشئ في رسم معالم حركة التأميم والسينما المناهضة للاستعمار بين عامي 1950 و1980 في إيران.
