Why I closed Mad Bay
Many of you might know me as Chad the Mad. I am an artist based in Lebanon and have dedicated a lot of my effort in building creative spaces for artists. These spaces are meant to fuel and fund projects for the growth and support of local culture and creativity.
My latest project was a beach bar for creatives named Mad Bay. The funds from Mad Bay were targeted towards funding an underwater sculpture museum. This museum would be an interactive and educational program to spread awareness of marine life and how pollution is damaging our shores.
After investing $12,000 into Mad Bay, my project came to an early demise due to circumstances beyond my control. It was due in entirely to a personal problem from two years prior to me opening between a 45 year old diving instructor and a 16 year old student. (Long story short)
After the instructor saw the young student working with me as a trainee, he immediately threatened my business, myself, and my cousin who has worked for him for 7+ years.
Kamal Greig of Dive the Med Club, a 45 year old dive mentor, had a fight with a 16 year old student two years ago and has held onto that grudge until now. He attempted to forcefully have me fire this student or threatened to “take big action” against me, my business, and my cousin.
After bringing the toxic nature of his personal life into my business as well as the management of the resort in which Mad Bay was established, I chose to not give in to Kamal’s and one of the resort's partners irrational demands and leave the project altogether with my losses.
This post is not money oriented. What I've lost is nothing. But I've tried multiple times to build a creative and nurturing artistic atmosphere in Lebanon and almost all attempts have been halted by similar men with fragile egos.
This is meant to spread awareness that some businesses should not be supported. I'll be changing my review on Dive the Med.
Share this post. If you can share and support it would be a step forward for telling these immature and irrational men that this kind of behavior is unacceptable.
