Bae Yoon Hwan — “Rather than limiting myself to a specific medium or style, I have allowed the form of my work to evolve according to what each work requires. I see this as a response to the time I am living through. Moving forward, I want to continue searching for the subjects that feel most essential at each moment.”

Bae Yoon Hwan has long expanded the narrative possibilities of painting by reworking layers of collected information and experience into pictorial forms. In recent works, his focus has shifted toward sensitively observing and recording the irreversible changes of the contemporary world through an Anthropocene lens. New motifs—including elephants, noses, and functional objects—enter the paintings, reflecting landscapes of survival through the artist’s perception and imagination.

배윤환 — “특정 매체나 양식에 스스로 제한을 두기보다 작업이 요구하는 방식에 따라서 자연스럽게 형식을 바꿔왔는데, 그것은 결국 제가 몸으로 통과하는 시대에 대한 반응이라고 생각해요. 그래서 앞으로도 하나의 스타일을 유지하는 것보다 그때 그때마다 가장 절실하게 다가오는 주제와 그것을 가장 잘 담아낼 수 있다고 생각되는 형식을 계속 찾아갈 것 같습니다.”

다층적으로 수집된 정보와 경험을 재구성하며 회화의 서사적 가능성을 확장해 온 배윤환. 최근 작가는 인류세적 관점에서 동시대의 비가역적 변화를 자신의 시각으로 섬세하게 감지하고 기록하는 데 주목하고 있습니다. 전시에는 코끼리와 코, 기능적 오브제 등이 새롭게 등장하며, 우리를 둘러싼 생존의 풍경을 작가의 지각과 상상력으로 투영합니다.

Hoh Woojung's practice is rooted in painting, shaped by his early inheritance of Korean traditional painting and his studies at the Beaux-Arts de Paris. Invited by Soyeon Ahn to join the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès residency at the Cristallerie Saint-Louis, Hoh turns to crystal as an unfamiliar material. The residency offers a new departure from the canvas, opening his practice to volume and three-dimensional form. Working alongside the craftspeople of Saint-Louis, he explores the material and techniques of crystal-making. Through this encounter, Hoh expands his long-standing painterly language into a new spatial dimension.

에르메스 재단의 초청으로 생루이 크리스탈 공방 레지던시에 참여한 허우중은 새로운 재료인 크리스털을 마주했습니다. 이번 레지던시는 작가에게, 캔버스를 넘어 작품의 부피와 3차원의 가능성을 탐구하는 계기가 되었습니다. 허우중은 생루이의 장인들과 함께 크리스털 제작의 다양한 과정과 기술을 경험하며 재료의 물성을 탐구했습니다. 회화에서 출발한 작가의 언어는 이 낯선 재료와의 만남을 통해 공간과 조각의 영역으로 확장됩니다. 새로운 매체와의 만남을 통해 변화해가는 허우중의 작업을 영상을 통해 만나보시기 바랍니다.

2026년 8월 10일, 챕터투(CHAPTER II) 설립자이신 최춘섭 회장님께서 별세하셨습니다.

일제 강점기인 1942년에 태어나셔서 대한민국의 근현대사를 몸소 겪으며, 사업보국이라는 투철한 기업가적 신념 아래 의료기기 분야의 선진화와 국민 보건의 질적 향상에 평생을 매진해 오셨습니다. 특히, 기업가의 사회적 책임을 중시하시며 평생에 걸쳐 다양한 기부활동에 누구보다도 열심이셨고 그런 관심이 2016년 비영리 미술공간 챕터투의 설립으로 이어졌습니다. 전시와 레지던시 프로그램을 통해 미술가들이 안정적인 환경에서 창작에 전념할 수 있도록 지원함으로서, 중견기업 메세나 활동의 모범적인 사례로 자리 잡게 되었습니다.

환하게 웃으시며 작업 중이던 작가들의 레지던시 문을 두드리시던 그 모습은 언제고 우리들의 마음에 훌쩍 찾아와, 아련한 기억과 함께 그분의 따뜻한 성품과 미술에 대한 관심과 애정을 환기시킬 것입니다. 

“미술을 통한 사회 공헌”이라는 저의 꿈을 응원해 준 임직원들과 가족들, 우리와 함께 해준 작가들, 갤러리바톤과 챕터투 구성원들에게 고마움을 표하고 싶습니다. 무엇보다도 이런 일들을 가능하게 하시고 예비하여 주신 하나님 아버지께 진정으로 감사드립니다.”  

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Choi Choon Sup, Founder of CHAPTER II, on 10 August 2026.

Born in 1942, Chairman Choi devoted his life to advancing Korea’s medical device industry and improving public health, while placing great importance on the social responsibility of business. His lifelong commitment to giving back to society led him to establish CHAPTER II in 2016 as a non-profit art space dedicated to supporting artists. Through its exhibitions and residency programs, he sought to provide artists with a stable environment in which to focus on their work, leaving a meaningful legacy of support for the arts.

We will especially remember his warm smile and the moments when he would quietly knock on the doors of artists working in residence. These memories will continue to return to us, reminding us of his warmth, generosity, and genuine affection for art and artists.

In his own words: “I would like to express my gratitude to my colleagues and family who supported my dream of contributing to society through art, to the artists who have shared this journey with us, and to everyone at Gallery Baton and CHAPTER II. Above all, I am truly grateful to God the Father, who made all of this possible and prepared the way for us.” — Choi Choon Sup (1942–2026)

We will remember him with deep gratitude and affection, and carry forward his belief in the importance of supporting art and artists.

Extended through September 5. 《Recurrent Measures》, Suzanne Song’s solo exhibition presented by the Williamsburg Biannual and Gallery Baton, brings together works that revisit recurring ideas and forms across the artist’s practice, revealing how they evolve over time.

Drawing on trompe-l’œil, Op Art, and Minimalism, Song’s works examine the instability of perception and invite viewers to reconsider the relationship between seeing and knowing, appearance and reality.

수잔 송의 개인전 《Recurrent Measures》가 9월 5일까지 연장되었습니다. 윌리엄스버그 바이애뉴얼과 갤러리바톤이 공동 개최한 이번 전시는 작가의 작업 전반에 반복적으로 등장하는 형식과 개념을 통해, 아이디어가 시간 속에서 어떻게 변화하고 새로운 형태로 확장되는지를 살펴봅니다.

트롱프뢰유 기법과 옵아트, 미니멀리즘의 시각 언어를 바탕으로 한 작품들은 지각의 불확실성을 탐구하며, 보는 것과 아는 것, 외양과 실재 사이의 관계를 다시 생각하게 합니다.

Jimok Choi’s works are currently on view in 《Whispers Toward the Outside》 at the Daegu Art Museum. Bringing together eight artists, the exhibition explores how art can perceive the world through its quietest gestures.

Choi’s practice investigates light, afterimages, and the act of seeing itself. Translating the sensory traces left on the retina into airbrushed paintings, his works examine how visual experience takes shape as an image. Alongside a series of paintings, the exhibition presents the new installation Das Bild, inviting viewers to experience afterimages firsthand and to reconsider the relationship between perception and the world we believe we see.

최지목의 작업이 대구미술관 기획전 《바깥을 향한 속삭임》에서 소개되고 있습니다. 이번 전시는 가장 낮은 목소리로 세상을 감지하는 예술의 가능성을 탐색하며, 여덟 명의 작가가 각자의 방식으로 감각의 순간들을 펼쳐 보입니다.

최지목은 빛과 잔상, 그리고 보는 행위 자체를 탐구합니다. 빛이 망막에 남기는 감각의 흔적을 에어브러시 회화로 옮기며, 시각적 경험이 이미지로 형성되는 과정을 화면에 담아냅니다. 전시에서는 회화 연작과 함께 신작 설치 《Das Bild》를 선보이는데요. 작품은 빛이 만들어내는 잔상을 관람자의 시야 안에서 다시 경험하게 하며, 우리가 본다고 믿는 세계와 지각의 관계를 새롭게 질문합니다.

Bae Yoon Hwan has long expanded the narrative possibilities of painting by reconstructing accumulated experiences and collected images into forms of pictorial storytelling. In recent years, his attention has shifted toward the irreversible transformations of the contemporary world, registering the conditions of the Anthropocene through his own perceptual and imaginative lens.

Bae Yoon Hwan’s solo exhibition "Heavy Breatera" explores how beings endure and persist within a changing world through the lens of his perception and imagination. Elephants, noses, and functional objects emerge as central motifs, revealing landscapes of survival in which bodies and objects, sensation and structure, sustain one another.

배윤환은 수집된 정보와 경험을 회화적 스토리텔링으로 재구성하며 회화라는 매체의 서사적 가능성을 확장해왔다. 작가는 최근 들어 인류세적 관점에서 동시대의 비가역적 변화를 자신의 시각으로 섬세하게 감지하고 기록하는 방향으로 관심을 옮겨가고 있다.

이번 개인전 《Heavy Breathers》는 변화하는 세계 속에서 존재가 버티고 지속하는 방식을 작가의 지각과 상상력을 통해 풀어낸다. 코끼리와 코, 기능적 오브제는 화면을 구성하는 핵심 형상으로 등장하며, 몸과 사물, 감각과 구조가 서로를 지탱하는 생존의 풍경을 드러낸다.

Doki Kim's work is currently on view in 《Moons: The Bright Rainbow Dots》, the inaugural Nam June Paik Media Art Festival exhibition. The exhibition brings together contemporary artists whose practices resonate with the legacy and ideas of Nam June Paik.

Kim develops multi-media installations that explore the many layers of the world, encompassing space and nature, matter and energy, as well as time and space. For this exhibition, she presents “The Apple and The Moon” (2024) and “Partial Solar Eclipse” (2024), two representative works from Kim’s “Pixel” series. The works metaphorically embody the exhibition’s English subtitle, 《The Bright Rainbow Dots》, through Doki Kim’s artistic perspective, while offering a new narrative that extends Nam June Paik‘s planetary vision.

김덕희의 작품이 제1회 백남준미디어아트페스티벌 기획전 《달들》에 선보여지고 있다. 본 전시는 백남준의 사유와 공명하는 동시대 작가들의 작품을 소개한다.

김덕희는 우주와 자연, 물질과 에너지, 시간과 공간을 아우르는 세계의 다양한 층위에 대한 깊은 관심을 다매체 설치 작업으로 전개하고 있다. 이번 전시에서는 작가의 픽셀(pixel)시리즈를 대표하는 작품 “사과와 달”과 “부분 일식”을 선보인다. 작품은 이번 전시의 영문 부제, 《밝고 다양한 점들(The Bright Rainbow Dots)》을 김덕희의 시선에서 은유하며, 백남준의 행성적 사유로 이어지는 서사를 새롭게 전한다.

Gallery Baton is pleased to announce an exhibition at Chapter II, a non-profit art space that it co-founded and continues to support through its programming and operations. 🛰️

Lee Deok Young’s solo exhibition, 《Grotto》 is on view at Chapter. Lee, who has continuously explored the psychological balance between anxiety and solace formed within social relationships and personal experiences, spent his time as a resident of the 2024–2025 Chapter II Residency examining the tensions of the city and observing old buildings and natural elements to find ways to capture the order contained within them. Having discovered rules and patterns within forms that appear complex and disorderly, he unveils an inner landscape where protection and oppression coexist in this exhibition. 

갤러리바톤이 전시기획과 운영에 참여하고 있는 비영리 미술공간 챕터투의 전시소식 🛰️

챕터투는 이덕영의 개인전 《동굴(Grotto)》이 진행중이다. 작가는 사회적 관계와 개인적 경험 속에서 형성되는 불안과 안식, 그 사이의 심리적 균형을 지속적으로 탐구해 왔다. 작가는 2024-2025 챕터투 레지던시(Chapter II Residency) 입주 기간 동안 도시의 긴장을 들여다보며, 오래된 건축물과 자연물을 관찰하며 그 안에 담긴 질서를 포착하는 방법을 모색했다. 복잡하고 무질서해 보이는 형태 속에서 규칙과 패턴을 발견한 그는 이번 전시에서 보호와 억압이 공존하는 내면의 풍경을 펼쳐 보인다.
