“We are all minorities and outsiders. Each and every one of us, even for a fleeting moment, experiences being a minority.
In this world, there is no one person who is the same; we are all different. There is no such thing as a perfect majority, only those who appear to be on the surface.” - LATITIA

[artist's note]

My works start from the fact that I am not a ‘wrong person’ but a ‘OTHER PERSON’.
And because we are all different, I say we are ‘MINORITIES’.
It’s clearly different from me, but for lonely souls like me, I put my honest stories in.
It is just to show that ‘I also had such moments.’ by describing the numerous emotions I faced, in the form I sensed at that moment. In order to express sincere emotions in external apperances, I have mainly drawn figures focused on tears or facial expressions and hand gestures. Recently, for a more clear depiction, I am also working on visualizing the emotions themselves or the inner scenes in rougher and more abstract forms.
This is same as sending a message of solidarity and support in a static but passionate way – like the audience raising their hands at the moment when Hedwig realizes that he is whole as one in ‘Midnight Radio’, the last number of the musical . Accordingly, as a symbol of the reason why I do art, I sometimes put ‘shape of raising hands’ to reveal that we can be together if we recognize our differences.
And in the process of working, I realized that all wounds and pains do not go away just by resolving them, and that we have to live with scars every day. So I get to think maybe all of these are part of our daily life. Moreover, I have witnessed phenomenons that we perceive the same things differently due to the nature of each of us being different, thus the content of my artworks is expanding into extremely everyday scenes. Since this is a work that raises our neglected parts to the same line as universality, I would like to draw as if listing various human affairs with assorted materials and media through diverse colors, subjects, and shapes. Therefore although I am currently focusing on painting, I plan to steadily expand my means of expression as well.

Thus, my work can be said to be a collection of pieces of ‘life’, as well as the various languages of love I send, and all of which is a journey of striving to do love in the name of solidarity.

저의 작업은 스스로가 ‘틀린 사람’이 아닌 ‘다른 사람’이라는 데에서 시작됩니다. 그리고 우리 모두는 각기 다르기 때문에 ‘소수자’임을 말합니다. 저와 분명히 다르지만 저와 같은 외로운 영혼들을 위해, 저의 솔직한 이야기들을 담아냅니다. 제가 마주한 수많은 감정
들을 그 순간에 감각한 형태로 묘사해가며 그저 ‘나 역시 그런 순간들이 있었다’는 것을 보여주는 겁니다. 진솔한 감정을 외적인 모습에서 표현하기 위해 눈물이나 표정, 손짓 등에 집중시킨 인물상을 주로 그려왔고, 최근에는 보다 명료한 묘사를 위해 감정 그 자체나
내면의 장면을 더욱 러프하고 추상적인 형태로 시각화하는 작업으로도 진행하고 있습니다.
이는 뮤지컬 원작 의 마지막 넘버 *‘Midnight Radio’에서 주인공이 스스로 하나로서 온전하다는 것을 깨닫고 공연하는 순간에 관객들이 손을 들어주는 행위처럼, 정적이지만 열렬히 연대와 지지의 의미를 보내는 것과 같습니다. 이에 따라 예술을 하는 이유의 상징으로서 ‘손을 드는 모양’을 담아 다름을 인정하면 함께할 수 있음을 드러내기도 합니다.
그리고 그 과정에서 모든 상처와 고통은 해소한다고 해서 없어지는 것이 아니며 우리는 상흔을 매일 안고 살아가야 하는 존재임을 깨닫고 어쩌면 우리가 특이점이라 생각하는 것들 역시 일상의 부분이라는 생각을 하게 됩니다. 심지어 각자 다르다는 속성으로 인해 같은 것도 다르게 감각하는 모습들을 목격하며 작업의 내용은 지극히 일상적인 모습들로 확장해가고 있습니다. 이는 우리의 소외된 부분들을 보편과 같은 선상으로 끌어올리는 작업이기도 하기에 다양한 재료와 매체로 각기 다른 색채 및 소재, 형태를 통해 다양한 인
세의 모습들을 나열하듯 그려가고자 합니다. 고로 현재 회화를 중심으로 하고 있지만 표현수단 역시 꾸준히 확장해갈 계획입니다.

그리하여 저의 작업은 ‘삶’을 장면장면 모은 조각들이자, 제가 보내는 가지각색의 사랑의 언어라 할 수 있으며, 이 모든 건 연대라는 이름의 사랑을 행하기 위해 애쓰는 여정입니다.

"The beginnings of the past lead to a new beginning."

[artist's note]
Every man's life has its beginnings. From the moment you are born in the world, you take the first starting point and create your own standards to create countless starting points.
The dictionary meaning of the starting point is "the place where something first happens or begins."
My second hometown, Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do, is surrounded by mountains and is the first place I experienced unfamiliarity when I was seven years old outside of my first hometown, Gimpo. The snow piled up and the clear night sky seen in Gangwon-do turned unfamiliar into excitement, which was the starting point.
Gangneung, where Gangwon Arts High School is located, which embraces the imposing waves of the sea, is a decisive place to walk the path of art. My growing pains as a child were washed away by the sound of rough waves in the sea and became another starting point.
The beginnings of the past lead to a new beginning. My current starting point, where mountains and seas are gathered, is that no one knows if there will be a landslide or a tsunami in the future, but what is clear is that the two become one and create a new starting point.

"I deal with my life and the lives of others, all of them. What has passed is a trace of living, and it is proof that everyone who reads this now is alive. We, who will live more in the future, constantly ask questions, and think to our surroundings during our lives. So do I. I will induce the question to not be cut off and help me find the true meaning of "life" together, which I have not yet found." - KIM SO HYUN

모든 사람의 인생에는 시작이 있다. 세상에 태어난 순간부터 첫 출발점을 찾아 그로부터 무수한 시작점을 만들어내며 자신만의 기준을 만들어 간다.
시작점이란 사전적 의미로는 "무엇인가가 처음 벌어지거나 시작되는 장소"이다.
내 두 번째 고향인 강원도 평창군은 산으로 둘러싸인 곳으로, 처음 고향인 김포에서 나와 7살 때 낯선 경험을 처음 느꼈다. 강원도에서 본 쌓인 눈과 맑은 밤하늘은 낯선 것에서 흥분으로 전환되었고, 그것이 시작점이 되었다.
강원미술고등학교가 위치한 강릉은 거친 바다 물결을 품은 곳으로, 예술의 길을 걷기 위한 결정적인 장소이다. 어린 시절에 겪었던 성장통은 바다의 거친 물결 소리에 씻겨나가 또 다른 시작점이 되었다.
과거의 시작들은 새로운 시작으로 이어진다. 산과 바다가 모여 있는 나의 현재 시작점에서는 미래에 산사태나 해일이 발생할지 아무도 모른다. 그러나 분명한 것은 두 가지가 하나가 되어 새로운 시작점을 만들어낸다는 것이다.

"나는 허영심이 많다.
원하는 것들은 어떻게든 얻으려 하며, 겉멋에 취해선 심신을 닦질 않는다. 그래서 겉은 꼬질꼬질하지만, 명품을 뒤집어쓴 것으로 만족하고, 속이 뒤틀려서 항상 부정적인 생각만 한다.
그런 주제에 본인의 허영심을 인지는 해서 겉으로는 티 내지 않고, 속으로만 심한 말들을 쏟아낸다." - 희멀건

‘희멀건’은 한국어로 ‘여러가지가 섞여서 애매한 상태’를 뜻한다
이는 우리들의 삶에서 나 자신의 애매한 태도, 타인과의 관계, 나와 사회, 나와 자연, 사회와 자연… 등 다양한 형태로 나타나는데,
보편적인 사람들은 이 관계에서 한 극단에 서지 않는다.
작가는 그런 어느 한 쪽으로 치우치지 않은 애매한 상태, 즉 희멀건함을 그리고자 한다.

[작가의 말]

작가는 자연과 자연을 이루는 단위에 작가의 마음과 감정을 빗대어 표현한다.
과거의 흔적과 현재의 모습, 모든 것은 자연 안에서 살아 숨 쉬고 현시대를 살아가는 우리와 공존한다.
때로는 선선하게 불어오는 한여름의 바람처럼, 차가웠던 겨울 속 한줄기 따뜻한 햇살처럼, 가을의 떨어지는 낙엽처럼.
자연은 수시로 성장하고 쇠퇴한다.
하지만 자기 자신을 훼손하고 파괴하지는 않는다.
그렇기에 작가는 자연과 자연을 이루는 단위에 작가의 의도를 심어 화면을 구성하고 현재를 살아가는 보는 이들로 하여금 자신의 모습을 훼손하고 파괴하고 있지는 않은지, 너무 조급한 마음을 가지고 살아가는 건 아닌지 질문을 던진다.

The artist express artist’s mind and feelings to nature and the unit that compose nature.
The traces of the past and the appearance of the present, everything coexists with us who live in the present and breathe in the nature.

Nature grows and fades from time to time. But it never damage and destroy itself.

"일어난 모든 사건과 자신이 가진 모든 것, 마주함으로부터 외면하던 것들과 미지의 영역에서 오는 두려움. 모든 것들에게는 공포가 있다. 공포를 맞이하는 그 순간순간에 외면 또는 직면을 선택한다. 그리고 선택된 자신의 모습이 남는다. 자신을 외면해야 했던 자신. 모든 순간들이 빛으로 타들어 가는 때에 모습은 비로소 선명히 보이고 이후 소멸되는 과정을 그렸다." - 구자현

우리가 외면하고 싶어하는 것들을 마주하는 순간을 그린다.
가려둔 것을 마주할 때 느끼는 복합적인 감정을 폭발과 타오름으로 표현했다.
고사리나 이끼와 같은 그늘에서 자라는 식물이나, 강한 빛을 내는 것들을 소재로 삼는다.

"보일 듯하면서 보이지 않는 인간의 미세한 감정들은 늘 어려운 존재로 다가온다. 공간이란 물질적 또는 심리적으로 널리 퍼져있는 장소 이지만 개개인에게는 유동적인 존재다.

일상에서 얻는 감정들과 방 안이라는 공간을 새롭게 재해석하여 가상의 스토리를 제작한다. 캐릭터와 화면 구성을 통해 일반적이지만 일반적이지 않은 분위기를 연출한다.

작가의 작품 속에는 또 다른 현실 세계가 존재한다." - 최은영

"Things that are increasingly hard to find and forgotten in a modernized society"

"2021년부터 그리고 있는 구식 상점 작업은 빠르게 현대화되는 사회에서 아직까지는 자리하고 있지만 점점 찾아보기 힘든 것, 잊혀지는 것들을 주제로 한다.

상가에 여러 겹으로 붙어있던 간판들은 어느 순간 깔끔하고 획일화된 모습으로 변화하게 되었고, 가끔씩은 오래된 간판들만의 개성이 그립기도 했다. 그래서 길을 거닐다 마주치는 독특한 옛날 간판을 달고 있는 가게들의 모습을 큰 각색없이 그대로 그려냈다.
단순히 오래된 가게들을 보존하고 싶은 마음보다는 사람들의 개성이 담긴 가게와 간판 글귀의 다양성과 심미성을 사람들에게 일깨워주고 공유하고 싶은 마음이 더 크다." - 추연아

작가는 주로 자극적이지 않은 일상의 소소한 풍경과, 과거에는 존재했지만 점점 사라지고 있는 것들을 한국화 물감으로 담담하게 그려내고 있다.
우리의 삶 속에서 사라져가고 있는 공간들을 있는 그대로 그리는 작업을 주로 진행하며, 동시에 작품을 통해 메세지를 강하게 전달하기보다는 그리는 대상 자체에 집중하는 것을 추구한다.
작가는 이를 통해 새 것, 세련된 것을 추구하는 사회 속에서 오래되고, 어쩌면 촌스럽다고 여겨지는 것도 그것만의 분위기와 아름다움이 있음을 보여주고자 한다.

"The project of working on outdated stores, which started in 2021, focuses on things that are gradually becoming harder to find and being forgotten in a society that is rapidly modernizing, but still exist for now.
The signs that were stacked several layers on the storefronts suddenly transformed into a neat and uniform appearance, but sometimes I missed the individuality of the old signs. Therefore, I drew the appearance of shops with unique old signs that I come across while walking down the street without significant alteration.
Rather than simply preserving old shops, my greater desire is to awaken and share the diversity and aesthetic appeal of the shops and sign slogans that reflect people's individuality." - CHOO YEON A

The artist focuses on drawing everyday scenes that are not provocative, as well as things that existed in the past but are gradually disappearing, with Korean watercolor paint in a calm manner.
The artist mainly work on drawing disappearing spaces in our lives as they are. Rather than strongly conveying messages through her artwork, she pursue focusing on the subject she draws.
In a society that pursues new and trendy things, the artist wants to show that old and perhaps considered outdated things also have their own atmosphere and beauty.

"When I bask in the sun or watch the trees rustle, I often feel rewarded and healed from a hard day.
For some, stone may play a role, and for others, food may play a role.
However, if there is light, there is always a shadow, so there are parts that are marginalized, parts that do not receive light.
That alienated and dark part may be the person we live with or the animal.
If the shadows of all the parts that were thought to be dark were given color and become beautiful colors, wouldn't both light and shadow be able to shine brilliantly?
Through my work, I want to convey to the marginalized and lonely that all people who live in the world are precious and brilliant beings.
If there is even one person who believes in you, that alone is enough courage to live in the world.

"나는 햇빛을 쬐고 있거나 나무가 살랑이는 모습을 보고 있으면 고단한 하루의 보상을 받고 치유를 받는 느낌이 들곤 한다.
어떤 사람에겐 돌이 또 어떤 사람에겐 음식이 그 역할을 할 수도 있다.하지만 빛이 있다면 언제나 그림자가 있기에 소외된 부분, 빛을 받지 못 하는 부분도 있기 마련이다.
그 소외되어 어두움을 지니고 있는 부분이 어쩌면 우리가 함께 살아가 는 사람이 될 수도, 동물이 될 수도 있을 것이다.
