This quote struck me today. (And not simply because it is from one of my favourite wordsmiths.)
A lot of us who grew up expressly and regularly being told that we are worthless, garbage, are - as adults - incapable of surveying, not only our worth, but our accomplishments, distinctions, or progress. We do not experience pride as it pertains to our accomplishments or to our cultivated, individual self. We have a difficult time seeing our own mythology in solid form, while that of others seems to loom so easily large.
In these cases, I have often told my students to surround themselves with themselves. Adorn your space with photos or relics from past achievements, travels, performances, holidays, celebrations, or just moments when you were really, really comfortably happy. Spend considerable time reminiscing and meditating upon them. Let the sensation you felt during those times zing your skin, then move on. Do this regularly. Let yourself take form.
I’ve had students who, no matter how long they had been dancing, couldn’t think of or refer to themselves as “dancers”.
If you find this sounding familiar, start today with one photo, one relic. We are creatures that need ritual in our lives. Start here. 🖤
